Overview and metadata sections
Julian Street (1879-1947) was an American author, journalist, enologist, gastronome.
The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and notes, both published and unpublished, of Julian Street, ranging from his early reporter and drama critic days (1900-1910) up to the page of Table Topics he was working on just before his death (1947). Included are typescripts, manuscript notes, and proofs for 6 nonfiction works, 4 novels, 21 scripts, approximately 88 articles, plus the series of articles for Table Topics (which was a publication of Bellows & Co.), approximately 58 short stories, speeches, poems, and anecdotes and memoirs saved for a biography which was never written. Most notable are American Adventures, Table Topics, When We Were Rather Young, The Country Cousin, Rita Coventry, and "Mr. Bisbee's Princess."
The large body of correspondence includes many authors and prominent people of the period, such as Willa Cather, Clarence Darrow, Maude Howe Elliot, Edna Ferber, W.C. Fields, several Roosevelts, and Booth Tarkington. Letters of family and friends include Margaret Kennedy Davies, Robert Sawyer, Francis Marshall, and Kenneth Whistler Street. In addition, there is an extensive subject file of material in the form of notes, clippings, pamphlets, etc., relating to Street's writings, as well as journals, wine-tasting scrapbooks, photographs, documents, tearsheets of his works, and printed matter about food and wine with menus and wine lists. Also mentionable are Street's diploma from the "Legion of Honor" in France and photographs of the Streets, George Ade, Jerome Kern, Theodore Roosevelt, Booth Tarkington, and others.
Papers of other persons consist of Margot Street's correspondence after 1947 and the works and letters of Ellis P. Butler, Irvin Cobb, Matthew P. Andrews, Karen Aptakin (author of the senior thesis Change and Constancy: A Literary Biography of Julian Street and Booth Tarkington), Auguste Escoffier, caricatures by James Montgomery Flagg, Hubert Osborne's dramatization of Street's comedy Rita Coventry, and others.
A lantern slide projector with glass slides taken by Street on a trip to Japan (ca. 1920) have been transferred to the Visual Materials Division.
Gift of Mrs. Julian Street with additions.

Contains 2 card photographs (measuring 11 x 15.5 cm. and 10 x 14 cm.) of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show touring Italy in 1906, autographed by Buffalo Bill, addressed to Street himself. Also contains negatives for the related images present in Box 57, as well as related postcards and a photograph of Mrs. Chas Griffin (Mlle Olivia), a snake charmer, included with a piece of research correspondence from 1933.
Physical Description1 box
Three small boxes containing 101 collodion and silver gelatin prints (measuring approximately 12 x 10 cm.), many of which are duplicates, of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show touring Italy in 1906. The images feature many behind-the-scenes looks at the show and its members, including posed pictures of Buffalo Bill himself as well as other performers and stars, including the Ogalala Chief Iron Tail. There are images of cowboys, showmen, locals attending the performances and the staging areas themselves. Street apparently accompanied this 1906 show during his time as a reporter.
Physical Description1 box

Three of the prints can be attributed to professional photographers A. James Harlan and The Photo-Craft Shop, Colorado Springs, Colo. Subjects include mining, mining towns, railroads and railroad equipment as well as local scenes in the streets of early 20th century towns.
