Godwin, Parke, 1816-1904

Parke Godwin was an American journalist and author based in New York City. In the 1850s he became an ardent abolitionist. An associate editor of Putnam's Magazine, Godwin became sole editor from January 1868 to November 1870.

The collection consists of a wide range of published and unpublished manuscripts of Godwin (Princeton Class of 1834), including History of France, A New Study of the Sonnets of Shakespeare, A Playspell Abroad, Teachers of the Ninetheenth Century (three chapters of this projected book), numerous essays (several on the Civil War period), four plays, five stories, two folders of poetry, and notes and fragments for other works. In addition, the collection houses a folder of correspondence, a list of sub-committees for the American Committee of the Statue of Liberty, and six folders of unidentified papers of others.

Roughly grouped into Works, Notes, Correspondence, and Miscellaneous.

Publications: The History of France (N.Y.: Harper, 1860), A New Study of the Sonnets of Shakespeare (N.Y.: G.P. Putnam, 1900), The Movement of Political Opinion and Its Relations to Existing Controversy (N.Y.: Evening Post Steam Presses, 1877)

Donated by Elizabeth Love Godwin in 1956.
