The collection consists primarily of letters and autograph copies of parts of manuscripts of 19th-century English and American poets and novelists collected by Mather. Included are the manuscript notes (undated) for a sermon in the hand of Cotton Mather and an opinion by Francis Scott Key regarding the articles of association for the Geo-Town Importing & Exporting Company. Other notables represented in the collection are Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Hardy, Washington Irving, Margaret Fuller Ossoli, and Edgar Allen Poe. There is also a box of Photostats of the material.

An alphabetical list (10 pp.) of names in the collection is available in the Dept.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
