Princeton University's Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies was founded in 1981 as the Program in Women's Studies. The program is interdepartmentally run and offers an area of concentration that supplements the undergraduate or graduate major. Students must complete five courses in women's studies and choose a senior thesis topic that incorporates issues related to women's studies. The program also publishes CRITICAL MATRIX, a journal of women's studies authored by graduate students and printed twice annually.

The objective of this journal is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in gender and sexuality studies by cultivating high-quality student research, and increasing undergraduate access to the field. The journal operates on a biannual basis and is entirely student run.
