Overview and metadata sections
The Rose Photography Studio of Princeton, New Jersey was founded in 1873 by Royal Hill Rose, and was operated by successive generations of the Rose family until 1951. The studio provided photography services for the Princeton community as well as Princeton University.
The collection consists of approximately 700 glass-plate negatives of images of Princeton University taken by the Rose Photography Studio. The negatives depict campus events, alumni reunions, class photographs, and student groups.
All information regarding the content and the number of plates in the collection was transcribed from existing box labels. Any discrepancies between this list and the contents of the collection are the result of the original labels. Though most of the plates lacked accompanying dates, by and large the majority of the class photos were taken at reunions.
The written remembrances of Frances Virginia Rose Himson, a descendent of the Rose family, were consulted in preparation of the Historical Note. A copy of this document can be found in the Library's collection file.
The glass-plate negatives which comprise the Rose Photography Studio Collection were once part of a larger collection of approximately 8000 Rose Studio negatives held at Firestone Library. In 1992 that collection was gifted to the Historical Society of Princeton, however in June of 1995 a group of approximately 700 negative plates which depicted University activities were transferred to the University Archives in the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, forming this collection.
This collection can also be found under call number AC317. The materials described here are the same as those described in AC317, Series 1, Boxes 1-71.
This collection was processed by Daniel Brennan in March 2009. Finding aid written by Daniel Brennan in March 2009.
