Overview and metadata sections

The John Cleve Green Collection consists of research materials compiled regarding the life of John Cleve Green and his contributions to Princeton University. Included are biographies, obituaries, and genealogical information on the Green family, as well as portraits of John Cleve Green and one of his relatives, George S. Green. Also in the collection are copies of Green's will and an appraisal of his estate, as well as several letters sent to Green by Princeton treasurer (and former New Jersey Governor) Charles Smith Olden regarding the financial needs of the college.

The documents which comprised the John Cleve Green Collection were compiled by several different researchers. It is unclear when they bulk of the materials reached the University Archives, however it would appear that many of the later documents were added by historian William K. Selden while researching his 1988 book The Legend of John Cleve Green.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
