Several sets of documents within the collection are photostatic copies of originals, however there is generally little or no indication as to where the originals are located.

The origin of this collection is unclear. At some point the collection became part of the Princetoniana Collection and entered the University Archives. Many of the documents, such as the inquiries, are directed to University Secretary Varnum Lansing Collins, and it is likely that he was responsible for the foundation of the collection. Other documents however, particularly those in the "clippings" and "gravesite" files appear to have been added to the collection at a later time by Archives staff.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. The Manuscript Division of the Princeton University Library holds a small collection of Grover Cleveland Papers.

Additionally, the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress holds the largest collection of Grover Cleveland papers, including those which document his presidential administrations.

The New York State Library also holds a small collection of Grover Cleveland manuscripts.
