Overview and metadata sections

Ella Schaap joined the Museum staff in 1980 as a volunteer in the Medieval and Renaissance Decorative Arts department. During this period, the Museum divided the administration of its decorative art collections between this department and that of European Decorative Arts after 1700. By 1982, Schaap was named Curatorial Associate for the Garvan Tiles Exhibition and approximately one year later for the Dutch Tiles Collection.

These are the records of curatorial associate Ella Schaap. The material, consisting of correspondence, reports and draft writings, primarily documents the exhibition and catalogue featuring the gift of Mrs. Francis P. [Mabel Brady] Garvan of more than 230 Dutch tiles to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The tiles date from the 15th to 18th century. Included in the records are Schaap's report on the tiles of Netherland, based on personal observations made during her one-month stay there in 1980, as well as documentation of the NEA grant that funded the creation of the Museum's collection catalogue, published in 1984, and the related history and research compiled for it. Ms. Schaap curated the exhibition that featured the tiles. Entitled "Dutch Tiles from the Collection of the Museum of Art," the exhibition ran from March through May 1984. The records documenting it are the most extensive in this collection, and the files pertain to subjects ranging from installation planning and tile contractors to lending institutions and travel expenses.
