Overview and metadata sections
Lawrence Johnson Morris (1870-1949) was born in Fernbank, Pennsylvania to James Cheston Morris and Mary Ella Johnson. He entered Haverford College in 1885 and graduated in 1889, earning a bachelor's degree. At Haverford, Morris was recognized as the secretary, treasurer and historian of the class as well as the winner of the one mile walk in 1889. After graduation, Morris worked for his uncle's trading firm Lawrence Johnson and Co. and became a partner in 1905. He was a member of a number of Philadelphia-area clubs including the Rittenhouse Club, University Club, Merion Cricket Club, Philadelphia Skating Club and more. Morris died in 1949.
This collection contains a pen-and-ink caricature drawn by or drawn of Lawrence J. Morris, a member of the Haverford College Class of 1889. The drawing depicts a man, possibly Morris, sitting on top of a rolling cart. In the figure's hand is a hatchet and chisel, while his foot supports a bucket with liquid spraying out. The figure looks to be in a slightly disheveled state, with tools emerging from his pocket. The L.J. and Co., inscribed on the side of the rolling cart, is likely a reference to Morris's uncle's mercantile firm of the same name. The drawing is undated.
