Overview and metadata sections
James Carey Thomas (1833-1897) was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Dr. Richard Henry and Martha Carey Thomas. Thomas attended Haverford College and graduated in 1852, after which he pursued graduate school at the Maryland School of Medicine. Thomas was the Haverford College alumni orator in 1864. He married Mary Whitall Thomas and the couple had eight children, including Martha (Minnie) Carey Thomas, the president of Bryn Mawr College from 1894-1922. Thomas died on November 9, 1897 in Baltimore, Maryland.
This collection contains notes for a speech given by James Carey Thomas to the Alumni Society of Haverford College. The majority of the material recalls Thomas's time at Haverford, making references to the activities and events which had the most impact on his early life. Thomas recalls, with great fondness, a past Haverford tradition of carving one's name into a particular tree as well as walks to the Schuylkill River. He credits an early education in the Society of Friends with the successes of those gathered and preaches the importance of growing up with Quaker values. The notes are undated.
