Joseph B. Taylor was born on March 16, 1821 in Burlington County, New Jersey, to Benjamin Taylor and Sarah Brantingham. He enrolled in Haverford College in 1839 and left during his sophomore year. He died on December 18, 1877 in Fallsington, Pennsylvania.

This collection contains a single letter from Joseph B. Taylor to Richard F. Mott, dated January 14, 1840. The letter primarily discusses Taylor's time at Haverford, including an anecdote about a football-related injury and the declining quality and quantity of food served on campus. Classes are also discussed, with Taylor expressing his dissatisfaction in his papers and the amount students are required to write. Near the end of the letter, Taylor discusses joining two societies at Haverford, the Loganian Society and the Haverford Penn Literary Society, both were focused on debate and mock trial.
