David Stroud Burson entered Haverford in 1834 as a sophomore and left before graduation in 1835. He then studied Medicine at Miami Medical College in Ohio. Upon graduation, he became a teacher. Samuel J. Gummere was an assistant teacher at Haverford College beginning in 1834, and became president of Haverford in 1862.

The collection contains one handwritten letter. The collection contains one handwritten letter from David Stroud Burson to Samuel J. Gummere regarding a recommendation for a teaching job.
