John R. Winslow was born in Piney Woods North Carolina on November 8th, 1820. Winslow entered the Junior class at Haverford College in 1838. After graduation Winslow became a physician and surgeon as well as a profesor of Materia Medica at the Maryland College of Pharmacy. He died in Baltimore, Maryland on February 13th, 1866.

The John Randolph Winslow commonplace book contains songs collected and transcribed by Winslow during h is time at Haverford College. The songs and excerpts are arranged in no particular order, but range from religious songs to messages written to Winslow while in college.
