Overview and metadata sections

Oliver Owen (1846-1907) was born on September 22, 1846 in Iowa. Owen enrolled in Haverford College during his sophomore year in 1867 and graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree in 1874. He served as an assistant superintendent and tutor in Classics and Ethics from 1870-1871. Owen pursued a career in education, later becoming a minister in an Episcopal Church in Clinton, New York. He died on April 13, 1907, in Clinton, New York.

This collection contains a letter from Oliver Owen to Francis Barton Gummere, Gummere's response, a picture of Owen in priestly attire, and a correspondence between the vice president of Haverford College, Archibald MacIntosh, and Mrs. William G. Kafes. In the first letter of the exchange between Owen and Gummere, dated December 12, 1892, Owen voices his enjoyment in reading the "History of Haverford College" and relays his disapproval of the direction which the school had taken in recent years. Gummere's response, dated January 7, 1893, defends the school's work and his own stance on the management of the College. The final inclusion in the collection are two letters dated June 13, 1953 and June 19, 1953, respectively. The first letter, sent by Mrs. William G. Kafes presents the two earlier materials as being those of her grandfather and expresses her intent on donating them to the Haverford Special Collections. The second letter is Archibald MacIntosh's response to Kafes's inquiry, wherein he accepts the donation.
