Abstract:

This collection contains three letters addressed to Joseph Cartland, one sent by Julia K. Clarke, one by William H. Chase Jr. and one by William H. Chase Sr.

Joseph Cartland (1810-1898) was born on February 2, 1810, to Jonathan Cartland and Elizabeth Austin. Cartland was the superintendent of Haverford College from 1850 to 1853. In 1855, he married Gertrude E. Whittier and continued his career in education at the Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island. He died on June 1, 1898 in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

This collection contains three letters addressed to Joseph Cartland, one sent by Julia K. Clarke, one by William H. Chase Jr. and one by William H. Chase Sr. Clarke writes in the first letter dated May 30, 1850, that Samuel Parsons forgot to pay a bill to the foreman. The second letter, dated 1851, was written by William H. Chase Jr. after he was dismissed from Haverford College due to misbehavior. During the correspondence, Chase apologizes profusely for his "sin" and relays that the thought of his expulsion has made his parents ill. The final letter, sent from William Chase's father and dated June 6, 1851, thanks Cartland for dealing with his son's inappropriate actions.
