Abstract:

This collection contains a series of reports and records written by Lindley Murray Moore during his time as a Haverford College assistant superintendent.

Lindley Murray Moore (1788 to 1871) was born in Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, to Samuel Moore and Rachel Stone. Moore was raised as a Quaker and attended school in Massachusetts prior to his career in education. In 1813, he married Abigail Lydia Mott and the couple had three children together: Edward Mott Moore (1814-1902), Gilbert Hicks Moore (1816-1868) and Ann Mott Moore (1818-1899). Moore spent his career moving from one school to the next, often staying in the New York area. In 1848, he was hired as the assistant superintendent of Haverford College, a role which he occupied until 1850. Moore may be best known for his abolitionist views and actions. He delivered speeches calling for the abolition of slavery in the United States and assisted many in their journey for freedom along the Underground Railroad. Moore died on August 14, 1871.

This collection contains a series of reports and records written by Lindley Murray Moore during his time as a Haverford College assistant superintendent. Included are five letters from Moore to the Haverford Board of Managers regarding students academic performance and events taking place on campus. Though the students are primarily spoken about in a general sense, Moore singles out a few particular students to showcase deviations from the general populace (in both positive and negative cases). The documents are dated from September 11, 1848 to September 11, 1850.
