Overview and metadata sections
Asa Shove Wing was born on January 29, 1850 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, the son of Stephen R. Wing and Elizabeth Collins Shore Wing. He moved to Philadelphia when he was seventeen and began working for the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company. He became the vice president of the company in 1881 and the president in 1906. Wing served as the Treasurer of the Corporation of Haverford College from 1884 to 1916 and the Corporation's president from 1916 to 1928. He was also a trustee and director of Bryn Mawr College. Additionally, Wing was a director of the Provident Trust Company, the Philadelphia-Girard National Bank, and the Frankford and Southwark Philadelphia City Passenger Railroad, as well as an overseer of William Penn Charter School. Wing died on June 5, 1931.
This collection consists of letters to and from Asa S. Wing while he was President of the Nominating Committee for Bryn Mawr College's presidential search in 1921. The collection contains many letters from Bryn Mawr alumnae recommending candidates for the College's presidency. There are also letters from faculty and administrators at other institutions, many of whom answer Wing's query regarding the reasons for any "preference there may be as between a man or a woman for President of a Woman's College, other things being equal." The current Bryn Mawr president, M. Cary Thomas, also wrote to Wing with advice.
