Abstract:

Printed guidebook compiled by Gary Garber for the convenience of Haverford and Bryn Mawr first year students.

The first and second editions of the Disorientation Handbook were compiled by Gary Garber, Haverford Class of 1993, and published at his own expense. Garber donated all proceeds (approximately $100) to his favorite Bi-Co club, the Quaker Terrorists. Garber was a graduate of Loomis Chaffee preparatory school. At Haverford, Garber was a Physics and Astronomy major, and a cricket athlete from 1990-1992. Garber went on to study Physics at Boston University, and to focus his career on robots and education. The edition of the Disorientation Handbook published in 1994, which is presumably the third edition, was compiled by Bill Stern, Haverford Class of 1996.

This collection consists of the 1st, 2nd, and, presumably, 3rd editions of The Disorientation Handbook, a printed guidebook authored for the convenience of Haverford and Bryn Mawr first years. The editions consist primarily of text, with sections set aside at the ends of both editions for maps and public transportation tables for the Philadelphia area. The text provides descriptions of school traditions, clubs, social life, campus music and entertainment, local radio stations, theaters, stores and restaurants, tips for "survival" within the colleges, and copies of local laws pertaining to drinking, false identification, sexual and aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation, trespassing, and unlawful computer use. The editions also include extensive lists of professors sorted according to department, which consume the majority of the editions. Information on the professors was sourced from several hundred surveys of Haverford and Bryn Mawr students. The attitude of the editions is helpful but humorous, informative but informal.
