Overview and metadata sections

The Lyceum was founded 10th month 25, 1853 by members of the class of 1856. It disbanded soon after their graduation, but was influential in the founding of the Athenaeum, which was founded in 1855.

The Lyceum was a literary society that hosted discussions and readings. They published The Excelsior monthly.

Vol. 1, no. 5, 4th month 8th, 1854. Contents include poetry and prose on topics such as slavery in the United States, a Jewish legend, Robin Hood, and female influence.
