Overview and metadata sections

This lecture book was created for use by the Haverford School, the former name of Haverford College. The lecture book was created between 1833 and 1856, the years between the College's inception and its name change to Haverford College. The lecture book employs ideas found in the Old and New Testaments and the works of prominent philosophers, specifically Kant's principle of Duty. It's possible that these lectures were written by Daniel B. Smith, the first president of Haverford College and a professor of moral philosophy.

This collection contains one lecture book on the Course of Ethical Instruction. The book includes 162 handwritten pages on the topic. The book begins with Book 1, titled "Morality founded on Revelation". This section questions the Christian creation story and examines how stories from the Old and New Testaments can be aligned or misaligned with "history" and "truth" and how they should be applied to morality. The second book is called "Morality Founded on the Philosophy of the Human Mind." This section explores philosophy through fact and reason rather than revelation. Part 2 of the lecture book is titled "Applications of the Principles" and begins with Book 1, which is titled "Duties Arising out of the Union of Our Two Natures." This is followed by Book 2, "Duties Growing out of our Intellectual Constitution." Book 3 discusses "The Law of Duty in Relation to War." Book 4 is called "The Law of Duty in Regard to our Affections," and Book 5 is titled "Social Duties Growing out of Necessity of Labour and the Rights of Property." Book 6 discusses "Law of Duty in Relation to Political Affairs," and Book 7 concludes the lectures on the topic of "The Duties growing out of Religious Associations."
