Files from 1968/69 to 1982/83 includes minutes of the meetings with some memoranda and other material relating to meetings. After 1982/83, there are agenda with material relating to meetings.

The committee has done or attempted a number of things over its five year history. Sometimes the administration has asked for specific AAC approval for proposals, ranging from the trivial to the momentous; more often it makes major budgetary decisions without consultation or even notification. The committee has often ignored its own predecessors when setting its priorities or agenda. The Academic Council, in choosing committee members, has similarly ignored its requests for, e.g. continuity of membership. Memoranda, correspondence, and background material on discussion with Bartol Research Institute for physics and astronomy, to relocate on the Haverford or Bryn Mawr campuses. The intention was to develop a mechanism by which a scientific research institute and an undergraduate liberal arts college can interact in such a way as to enhance the work of each. The file includes statements in support and against Bartol, with considerations for educational benefit, Department of Defense support, siting, and relations with other parts of the College. There is also correspondence over dispute between Haverford and Bryn Mawr over which had precedence. The Institute was concluding a 50 year lease at Swarthmore; it finally went to the University of Delaware.

These files document the full range of progress and failure on the colleges' cross-majoring, cross-registration imbalances and billing, faculty appointments/leave, admission policies (expansion and admission of women), cost sharing for two-college programs. Reports, memoranda, correspondence of a committee appointed in early 1974 to compile a list of specific joint targets for cooperation, develop procedures for monitoring progress, and report to the two boards on the status of cooperation. It was composed of representatives from boards, administrations, faculties and students. There are cross registration statistics, and reports from administration, faculty, and students on the progress of cooperation.

Meeting minutes and memoranda concerning improvements to increasing diversity in faculty appointments, in addition to its ongoing monitoring of minority faculty appointments. Final report recommends discharge of CCFA and formation of new Committee on Diversity for 5 years to provide support for Ad Hoc Committees to help the Faculty to achieve its objective of diversity and make yearly reports and that all searches be open affirmative action searches.
Committee on Faculty Appointments was established in 1976/77 year charged with increasing the presence of minority faculty and with making recommendations on improving the quality of life for minority faculty already on campus—increasing minority presence to 8 to 10 full-time equivalents at all levels prior to 1982.

Memoranda, reports, statistics on question of whether or not the College's need to expand in order to survive financially and the related issues of admitting women and cooperation with Bryn Mawr College. The major portion of the files is for 1973 and concerns the Gubins report on budget projections to justify expansion and arguments against it.
The issue on whether or not to expand the college began with the previous administration and carried into the Coleman presidency. Coleman faced financial challenges for which an increased student body was one solution. The question then arose whether there was a sufficient pool of qualified men to support the increase. In that context, Coleman began exploring the admission of women. The discussion eventually came to conclude that a male-only college was discriminatory.
Controversy centered less on retaining the all-male college than the harm coeducation might do to Bryn Mawr College, with the Bryn Mawr community aggressively campaigning against it. From 1971 to 1976 Haverford's announced intention was to slowly expand and pursue coeducation through increased efforts toward cooperation with Bryn Mawr, with the efforts toward cooperation (cross registrations and shared courses, as well as other strategies) meeting with mixed success. Although Haverford faculty was initially divided, by 1976 it fully supported coeducation, as did the administration.
Nevertheless the Haverford Board of Managers, in a controversial December 10, 1976, decision, determined to admit women as transfers only and to not include them in the freshman class, and it called for greater cooperative efforts with Bryn Mawr. Coleman, resigned, saying that he was "not the one to give the College the leadership it needs in carrying out the decisions of the Board of Managers."

This file includes information on two committees with two different purposes. • Study Group on College Governance minutes and memoranda of committee to "examine the entire process of governance at Haverford to provide alternative suggestions on how decisions are made at the college." Minutes reflect lively discussions and suggestions for changes in governance for students, faculty, administration and board. Draft final report, November 1970, provides general considerations and recommendations for Board of Managers changes. Report and recommendations, December 1971, describes a College Council and College Forum system. With background literature. Formed because several issues of student participation in governance, and "without an immediate crisis on campus…. [there was] a unique opportunity to… examine the entire process of governance. Composed of four representatives of students, faculty, administration and board (not parents, staff or alumni because "of the very limited influence these groups have on campus affairs.") • Commission on Governance, 1972-1973: Memoranda, minutes, and reports of the Commission on Governance (faculty, administrator, students, liaisons to Board and Staff Assoc.) "To study the present governance administrative structures, and procedures for decision making" "to consider specifically and promptly issues and decisions which bear on diversity." Although it was suggested that what was needed was a radically reconstituted governance to represent diversity of the College, the Committee's recommendations were modest: a revised Provost selection procedure, a redefined Dean of Student Affairs, and changes to Student Government.

General Programs provides courses offered by members of various Departments with a distinct focus upon the student who is a non-major. They may be introductory and undirected toward further work in the major; or they may attempt to bring the insights and techniques of one discipline to bear on the problems important to another. They attempt to introduce students to intellectual experiences which are different from the ones they might otherwise choose. They have no prerequisites except where explicitly stated. The program had its beginning in an interdisciplinary Freshman Seminar Program, begun in 1969, that floundered because it was not a priority for faculty and had no political or financial clout. The Committee on General Programs was established in 1974 with budget and authority to develop the program, "the permanent institutional footing for a 'liberal education which is more than a motto.'"

Proposals for research projects and memoranda on policies and procedures of committee to review and decide on the propriety of plans for research involving human subjects. Research projects are conducted by Haverford and Bryn Mawr faculty and students, and by researchers outside the community using Haverford students. They are mostly psychology projects and many are sexuality and gender studies. Included is a study of psychedelic experiences, 1971, raising questions about legal liabilities. There is a Report on the "Ethics of Experimentation on Human Subjects at Haverford College, 1981.

Various reports, memoranda, minutes, and other documents relating to efforts to diversify student body, faculty, administration, curriculum. Most of the documents concern student minority protests and administrative and faculty reactions to them from 1972 to 1979, the formation of a Board Ad Hoc Committee to study minority concerns, 1980, and the early work of the Presidential Committee on Minority Concerns. Files after 1981/82 are less comprehensive.
Minority protest began with demands from the Black Students' League and Puerto Rican Students at Haverford in 1972 and culminated in a "strike" against participation in a boycott of non-academic activities. In 1976 the Asian Studies Group and the Students' Council joined with BSL and PRSH in the Minority Coalition again raised concerns and staged a hunger strike and sit-in. Students for Democratic Education formed in 1979 and continued the student action.

A group of no more than 14 freshmen met regularly with an instructor to explore a coherent topic of study. The course is designed to be inter-disciplinary in its approach, rather than to provide a formal introduction to a particular department. These seminars are intended to provide an opportunity for exploration, presentation, and learning across traditional departmental boundaries as well as to help students develop speaking and writing skills. The Freshman Seminar Program began in 1969; it floundered because it was not a priority for faculty and had no political or financial clout.

Margaret Ralston Gest's bequest (1955), in honor of her parents Emily Judson Baugh and John Marshall Gest, was for "an annual course of lectures in perpetuity on the fundamental unity of religions." In 1986, with assets outstripping Haverford's ability to spend it for the program, Haverford successfully petitioned the will to allow more flexibility "for any purpose related to the activities of the study of religion." The program provided a lecture series, an "Annual Dialogue," and seminars, with classes held at the Gest Center (located in Founders Annex reconstructed for Center in 1970, courtesy of Miss Miriam Thrall) and residence and meditation room in Woodside Cottage (closed in 1988).

Honor Council administers the Honor Code. It is an elected group of students responsible for introducing the Code to prospective students, Freshmen, transfers and new faculty, and mediating violations. The Honor Code applies to both academic and social activities. The academic code relates to tests, homework, laboratory reports, exams, and plagiarism. Among the activities that the social code covers are privacy, theft, harassment, acts of violence, and drug and alcohol abuse. The Honor Code is reviewed and ratified annually by the students at the Spring plenary, and every student is required to annually pledge to adhere to the Code.

This file, with indications that it was established for Commission on Women Students, was also used for Women's Concerns, Women's Center, Women's Studies, and just plain Women. The early material includes some memoranda for the Commission on Women Students, 1970, to examine several possible models for bringing women to the Haverford campus. It continues with Coeducation-Expansion Committee minutes, memoranda and recommendations,1971-1972, to consider whether to admit women and whether the student body size should be increased while holding faculty size relatively constant (the committee recommended in a 4th draft that women transfers be admitted; the 5th and final draft rejects that, urging cooperative coeducation with Bryn Mawr and increased enrollment to 725). Later records are for the College Committee on Women at Haverford report on aspects of college life which would most directly affect women students at Haverford and to suggest those changes or alterations in approach which seemed necessary to meet the challenge of coeducation, 1977-1979. After women were admitted the concern turned to the need for a Women's Center and director, 1981-1982, and a Women's Studies program, 1982-1983.
