Samuel Alsop (1813-1888) was born March 15, 1813 in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Othniel Alsop and Hannah Brown. Alsop was a teacher and author, and taught at Westtown School from 1853-1860. He married Rachel Griscom (1818-1890) in October of 1838, and the couple had three children: Samuel Alsop Jr. (1841-1888), Rachel Alsop (1845-?), and David G. Alsop (1853-1928). Samuel Alsop died May 27, 1888 in Philadelphia, Pa.

This collection is comprised of the single volume mathematics notebook of Samuel Alsop. The notebook includes notes and mathematical diagrams for classes Alsop taught at Westtown School during the year 1855.

The Samuel Alsop mathematics notebook was donated to Quaker & Special Collections, Haverford College, in 1939 by David Alsop, through Professor Albert H. Wilson.
