Abstract:

This collection is comprised of a single volume notebook of copied extracts of the letters of Thomas P. Cope from Norway. The extracts begin with descriptions of Cope's travel on the steam ship El Dorado, and later extracts describe his time in Norway, including descriptions of the country, the people he meets there, Quaker meetings attended, and Friends visited.

Thomas P. Cope (1823-1900) was born February 7, 1823, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry Cope and Rachel Reeve, and grandson of Thomas Pim Cope (1768-1854). He married Elizabeth W. Stokes on November 13, 1849, and the couple had children: Henry Cope (1850), Francis Cope (1852), Mary Francis Cope (1853), Eleanor Cope (1854), Margaret Cope (1856), John Stokes Cope (1857), Arthur Cope (1859), Walter Cope (1860), and Alban Cope (1864). Cope was a Quaker elder and accompanied Samuel Morris to Europe. Cope published a number of religious-related writings, including Passages from the life and writings of George Fox (1881), Passages from the life and writings of William Penn (1882), Views of Christian Doctrine (1882), and Passages from the Holy Writ (1894). Thomas P. Cope died on October 22, 1900, in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This collection is comprised of a single volume notebook of copied extracts of the letters of Thomas P. Cope from Norway. The note on the first page is as follows: "Extracts from letters of Thomas P. Cope from Norway 6 mo 5, to 7 mo 4 89. The following selections have been made at the request of friends and have been taken from family letters. It is hoped they will prove instructive as well as interesting although, as will be observed they are chiefly narrative and descriptive," signed E.W.G.
