Henry Russell (1814-1899) was born on July 31, 1814, in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Henry Russell and Content Wing Russell. He married Mary Mitchell in 1842, and the couple had two daughters: Mary Starbuck Russell (1844-1905) and Sarah Howland Russell (1847-1848). Russell died in Sandwich, Massachusetts, on April 6, 1899, at the age of 84.

This collection is comprised of the single handwritten diary of Henry Russell. Entries describe social calls, attendance at Quaker Meetings, personal and religious reflection, prayers, and reminiscences about his wife.
