Overview and metadata sections
George Bacon (circa 1780-1857) was born circa 1780, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Mary Bacon. Bacon married Naomi Tyler in 1804 in Greenwich, New Jersey. The couple had four children: George Wade Bacon (1807-1847), Richard Wood Bacon (1811-1876), Josiah Bacon (1812-1881), and Francis Bacon (1813-?). Bacon was an Elder in his Quaker meeting. Despite being an active Quaker, Bacon was also an enslaver. He died on January 16, 1857, in Greenwich, New Jersey.
This collection is comprised of 17 handwritten volumes of George Bacon's diaries from 1813 to 1829. All of Bacon's diaries were written in "the Gentleman's Annual Pocket Remembrancer," which, in addition to Bacon's daily entries, includes an almanac, lists of members of the United States government, and a list of the Army and Navy for each year. In addition to the 17 original volumes of diaries, the collection includes a folder of partial transcripts of Bacon's diaries, some typed, some handwritten, as well as an index of journal entries by topic.
Bacon's entries largely focus on descriptions of the weather, Quaker meetings attended, Yearly Meetings attended, births, deaths, and marriages in the Quaker community, social calls, and news of his family and business.
The George Bacon diaries were donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1967 by Margaret Bacon.
