Overview and metadata sections

Harry (ca.1899-1937) and Rebecca Timbres (ca.1897-ca.2000) were Quaker relief workers in India and Eastern Europe, especially Russia, under the auspices of the American Friends Service Committee during the 1920s and 1930s. Harry Timbres graduated from Haverford College in 1921, and received an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1928. Rebecca Timbres graduated from Teachers' College, Columbia University in 1918, and from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1920. They married in 1922. Harry Timbres died in Russia of typhus in 1937.

This collection consists of the papers of Harry Garland Timbres and Rebecca Timbres Clark. It includes the letters of Rebecca Timbres (1936-1937) to family members, and letters of Harry Timbres (1936), primarily to his wife, but also to his daughters. Their letters depict life in the Soviet Union in the mid-1930s and tell of their work.

There are also letters from J. Barnard Walton explaining the creation of copies of Harry Timbres's letters, a 1974 biography of Harry Garland Timbres by Rebecca J. Timbres (included with the biography are copies of letters to Harry or Rebecca from such people as Rabindranath Tagore), poems by Harry Timbres, and two photographs of Harry Timbres.
