Overview and metadata sections

Russell Stetler was a Haverford student, Class of 1966, who was active in opposing the Vietnam War while on campus. He formed a committee devoted to raising money for medical supplies for the Viet Cong, circulated a petition, and was involved in related activities off of Haverford's campus as well.

Sasan S. Mehrara graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. He received his law degree from George Washington University in 1997 and is currently a partner in the real estate department of Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett, LLP.

This collection is devoted to Stetler's antiwar activities and the reactions of others (the Haverford student body, administration, and Board of Managers; the Philadelphia School Board, who had given Stetler a scholarship; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Bertrand Russell; the Chinese Communist Party; and others involved in the antiwar movement). These documents are a collection of research materials for Sasan Mehrara's thesis on Stetler. Contents include handwritten interview and research notes as well as photocopies of articles, correspondence, court records, statements, and minutes. For this research, Mehrara's made use of documents held in archives at Temple University, McMaster University, Swarthmore College, and Haverford College.

Also included are notes related to Mehrara's thesis, correspondence by Mehrara with Stetler, and other documents related to Mehrara's writing of his thesis.

The Russell Stetlet collection was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College by Sasan Mehrara.
