Abstract:

This is a pocket sized notebook with a cover that reads "Centennial Memoranda 1876" and has a labeled drawing of Memorial Hall. It contains observations and lists from Fayette L. Rounds's trip to the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition from October 7th, 1876 to October 10th, 1876.

This information has been gathered from internal sources, and is the best speculation regarding the individual to whom this notebook belonged. Fayette Lansing Rounds (February 28, 1858 - August 17, 1928) was a resident of Broome County, New York. At the age of 18, he visited the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.

This is a pocket sized notebook with a cover that reads "Centennial Memoranda 1876" and has a labeled drawing of Memorial Hall. It contains observations and lists from Fayette L. Rounds's trip to the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition from October 7th, 1876, to October 10th, 1876. Throughout his notes he observes many of the exhibits, as well as their contents. He often includes prices along with his observations. Some of the things he records are the Golden Pyramid from British Columbia, musical instruments, baseball supplies, game chickens, telescopes, ancient instruments of war of Norway, necklaces, earrings, braid weaving machine, "Goddess of Liberty", Corliss engine, terra cotta ware, eggs of the emu, Spanish soldier, log cabin Mississippi, sea island cotton, and the first telegraph machine. Some of the buildings he mentions are the Main Building, Machinery Hall, Art Gallery, Kindergarten, Agricultural Hall, Woman's Pavillion, Pennsylvania Educational building, and Independence Hall. He also mentions visiting Girard College and a Zoological Garden (and he described many animals he saw there). There are a few miscellaneous notes scattered throughout, such as two pages in the back with accounts that may have been added after attending the Exhibition. About half the notebook has writing in it, the rest is blank. His handwriting is often difficult to read.

This collection consists of one notebook; the pages within it appear to be in the original order, with no pages missing or added.
