Cornelia Blow (née Weed) was born in 1841, to Mary and Harvey Weed of the prestigious Weed family of Connecticut. Blow married Meade R. Blow (1837-1867), the son of Robert and Susan Blow of Virginia, on December 11th, 1861. Blow and her husband sailed on the RMS Scotia to England in 1862, before continuing on to a tour of Europe for a combination of recreation, sightseeing, socializing, and visits to medical doctors regarding Meade's health problems, all of which documented by Blow in her letterbook.
This collection is composed of the single handwritten letterbook of Cornelia Blow. The volume is comprised of personal correspondence primarily addressed to Blow's mother and father on her travels through Europe with her traveling companion Meade between the dates of November, 1862 and May, 1863. Additionally included are a copy of a letter from Blow's mother addressed to Blow and one pressed fern. Letters are written from a variety of European locations including Liverpool, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseilles, Rotterdam, and Rome. Topics covered in Blow's correspondence include descriptions of her travels, the health of herself and Meade, messages for family members at home, food, and the ongoing American Civil War.
This collection is arranged in one volume.
The Cornelia Blow letterbook was purchased by Special Collections, Haverford College in January, 2015.
