Abstract:

The Mary Hoxie Jones collection includes genealogy and history materials on the Jones and Cadbury families, photo albums and scrapbooks of travel by Mary Hoxie Jones, and personal correspondence and poetry.

Mary Hoxie Jones was born to Rufus Matthew Jones and Elizabeth Bartram Cadbury on July 27, 1904 in Haverford, Pennsylvania. She attended Haverford Friends School, The Baldwin School, and Mount Holyoke College. From 1927 to 1929 she was the secretary for the Young Friends Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and she also worked as her father's secretary from 1929 to 1934. She lived in England, China, and New York City in the mid-1930s, working as a writer. Jones was on the staff of the American Friends Service Committee from 1939 to 1951. She traveled frequently, including numerous trips to England but also other locations in Europe, China, Japan, and Africa. In 1936 Jones began living with Frances Canby Ferris, who was the principal of Haverford Friends School from 1919 to 1946. Frances moved to Devon Manor after breaking a hip in 1972, and died in 1976. In 1951 Jones began working with her father's papers in Quaker & Special Collections at Haverford College, where she became a research associate in 1962. She received an honorary degree from Haverford College in 1985. She was a long-time member of Friends Historical Association. Jones was the author of Arrows of Desire, Beyond the Stone, Mosaic of the Sun, At the Point of a Lancet: History of the Canton (China) Hospital, and Swords into Plowshares. She died December 26, 2003.

Jones family genealogy contains materials related to ten generations of the Jones family. Materials are organized in Mary Hoxie Jones's original order by generation and descendent. Material types include letters, photographs, manuscripts, and notes; the amount of material available on each family member varies widely.

Cadbury family genealogy contains materials related to numerous family members, beginning in the eighteenth century. Materials are organized in Mary Hoxie Jones's original order by person or couple. Material types include letters, photographs, manuscripts, and notes; the amount of material available on each family member varies widely. Materials also include notes and charts constructed by Mary Hoxie Jones.

Other family genealogy includes Jenny, Goddard, and Hoxie family materials.

Personal papers include correspondence, notes and files, and poetry of Mary Hoxie Jones. Major correspondents include Helen Harris and her family, Joy Taylor, and Helga Holbeck. Most correspondence deals with daily life and experience; Helga Holbek's letters also detail her relief work in post-World War II Europe. General files include materials from Jones's time at the Baldwin School and Mt. Holyoke College, her honorary degree from Haverford in 1985, a 1953 travel diary from her time in France, passports, photographs, letters, and other materials. Poetry includes various drafts of "Tracing the Rainbow," her poetical autobiography.

Frances C. Ferris materials include photographs, materials from a vacation she took with Jones, information about her moving into a retirement home, and documentation of family heirlooms such as furniture (these materials are not part of the collection).

Maine materials include newspapers from the towns of South China and Cates, where many Jones family members were from, including clippings about the libraries. There are also photographs of the area.

Miscellaneous materials include an unpublished manuscript of the journal of Augustine Jones, as well as the published items The Barrow Family: Myth, Legend, and Some Fact and Theirs -- No Wealth But Life, The Jones-Herd Saga. There is also a Bible given to Mary Hoxie Jones in 1966 by the granddaughter of Alice Jones.

Photo albums and scrapbooks include an album of photos of family and friends, "our cottage," house in Haverford, and the Haverford campus, 1915-1920. A European photo album documents a 1929 trip to England with her parents, including various Quaker sites such as Pendle Hill, Swathmoor Hall, and the London Young Friends conference; it also includes Greece and Rome with archeological sites. A photo album of a trip to China and Japan in 1932 has photos of a wedding, the Great Wall, and temples and art. A photo album of trip to England in 1933-1934 includes various sites and nature scenes. A separate album documents a trip to Porthcothan in 1934 with Herbert and Constance Crosland. A scrapbook documenting a1935 hiking trip to the Yoho Glacier and Lake Louise in British Columbia includes maps, brochures, and photos of the landscape and friends such as George Vaux. A 1935-1937 photo album includes photos of family and South China Maine. An undated scrapbook of a trip to China includes photographs and postcards of Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China.
