Alice M. Gitchell was born on July 24th, 1949. She graduated from William Hall High School in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1967, before recieving a bachelor's in Chemistry from Michigan State University and a master's in Analytical Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University, where she conducted research on the photochemistry of air pollution under the direction of Dr. Julian Heicklen. She married William (Jamie) Cromartie, with whom she had two children, Benjamin James and Robert Lawrence Cromartie. Gitchell has worked at Stockton University in Galloway Township, New Jersey, since 1976, as a faculty member, research assistant, the director of the University's Geothermal Project, and as a Energy Specialist, focusing on sustainable energy resources. She has been active with the Atlantic City Area Friends Meeting and the Philadelphia Religious Society of Friends, serving as Meeting Clerk for the Atlantic City Friends and as a member of the Women's Committee for the 1985 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. She also served as a Young Adult Friends co-clerk for many years, and was a Young Friends adult volunteer from 1997 to 2012, including serving as adult co-clerk from 2004 to 2006.

This collection contains 41 handwritten, bound journals and documents from the Women's Committee of the 1985 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting written by and belonging to Alice M. Gitchell. Journal entries cover the years 1964-2010 and include personal and religious reflections and desciptions of dreams, personal and professional day to day activities, major life events, and ongoing struggles with mental health. Documents from the 1985 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting include correspondence and drafts relating to the Women's Committee's statement issued on abortion rights.
