Overview and metadata sections
George O. Caldwell, Scranton, Pa., physician, was born in 1859 or 1860 and was a native of Nashua, N.H. He received an M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York in 1886. Caldwell appears to have been a member of the medical staff at the New York City Lunatic Asylum on Ward's Island, and was then transferred to the New York City Asylum for the Insane at Central Islip, circa 1889, where he remained at least until 1896. By 1900, he had opened a medical practice in Scranton, Pa. George O. Caldwell died on 18 November 1905 at Manchester, New Hampshire.
The collection contains one volume of George O. Caldwell's student notes, 1884-1885, on the surgical lectures of J. Williston Wright in the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York (pp. 1-106), with notes on materia medica (pp. 108-134), and an 1887 hospital formulary of 307 recipes (pp. 135-232), probably used at the Female Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island. Also included are nine letters, 1891-1894, from Caldwell to his fiancee, Annie C. Roche, written while Caldwell was on the staff of the New York City Asylum for the Insane at Central Islip. The letters concern his experiences on the staff of the asylum, the treatment of insane patients, and personal matters.
