Overview and metadata sections

Ephraim A. Santee was born in Luzerne County, Pa., in 1838. In 1862, he began to study medicine with A. L. Custer, a Conyngham, Pa., practitioner. Santee attended the 18631864, 1864-1865, and 1868-1869 sessions of Jefferson Medical College; he received his M.D. from Jefferson in 1869.

Santee practiced medicine in several towns in Luzerne County. From 1865 to May 1866, he practiced in Lehman, then moved to Shickshinny. In October 1870, he began to practice in Hollenback and, in May 1872, Hobbie. Santee entered into a partnership with a Dr. Price in 1878. In 1886, he moved his practice to Wapwallopen. E. A. Santee died of senile debility at Wapwallopen on 16 September 1915.

The collection contains three ledgers from the medical practice of E. A. Santee in Luzerne County, Pa., at Hobbie, 1870-1877, with some account settlements to 1889, and Wapwallopen, 1886-1905, with some account settlements to 1911. The ledger entries list patient's name, date, and fee. Each volume contains an index to the ledger accounts. The two ledgers from Wapwallopen give brief summaries of the treatment or reason for visit, while the Hobbie ledger refers to accounts in E. A. Santee's daybooks, two of which, volumes "A" and "C" form part of MSS 2/0223-01. Ledger "A" from Wapwallopen also contains notes on the medical education of [Charles] LaMotte Santee (1876-1963) at Jefferson Medical College.

The collection also contains one undated albumen print of E. A. Santee on the porch of his home.

The collection of E. A. Santee's ledgers was purchased through funds donated by the Samuel Lewis Circle by the Historical Collections of the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from Carmen D. Valentino Rare Books and Manuscripts on 3 February 1992.

The collection was processed and catalogued in February 1992.
