Samuel Reed Shaner was born in Zieglerville, Pa., on 1 May 1884. He married Delilah Mae Glasser in 1917; they had three daughters. Shaner died on 10 August 1960 of myocardial infarction.
Shaner received an M.D. from the Medico Chirurgical College of Philadelphia in 1916; he also received the James M. Anders Gold Medal Award for medical case reporting. Shaner practiced medicine in Philadelphia. From 1917 to 1926, he assisted James William Kennedy, chief surgeon at Joseph Price Memorial Hospital and was a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology at the Philadelphia Dispensary.
Shaner was president of the West Philadelphia Medical Association and a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia County Medical Society.
The collection contains Samuel Reed Shaner's diploma from the Medico Chirurgical College of Philadelphia and his certificate of graduate fellowship in the college's James M. Anders Medical Society, 9 June 1916.

The Shaner diploma and certificate were donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Frederick Murtagh of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on 13 June 1991. Dr. Murtagh is a grandson of Samuel Reed Shaner.
The collection was catalogued in 1991.
