Alexander Jackson, Tennessee physician, was born circa 1803. He married Mary Hurt of Virginia, and they had several children, including Howell E. Jackson (1832-1895), a Supreme Court justice, and William H. Jackson (1835-1903), a Confederate general. Alexander Jackson died in 1879. Jackson received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1824. His thesis was on the use of cold in fevers. He first practiced medicine in Halifax County, Va., then removed to Paris, Tenn., in 1830. He settled in Jackson, Tenn., and represented his county in the state legislature.
Alexander Jackson's notes, 26 January through 27 February 1824, from lectures in Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. Includes occasional diagrams and subject index. Lecturers include: Nathaniel Chapman on the practice of medicine, John Redman Coxe on materia medica, William Gibson on surgery, and William P. Dewees and Thomas C. James on midwifery. Includes occasional notes on Robert Hare on chemistry and Philip Syng Physick on anatomy.
