John Fothergill, English physician, was born in Wensleydale, Yorkshire, on 8 Mar. 1712. He died of a urinary disorder on 26 Dec. 1780. After study with an apothecary, Fothergill received an M.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1736. He began to practice medicine in London in 1740. He was known as a botanist and philanthropist. He became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1744 and a fellow of the College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1754.
