Overview and metadata sections

The Section on Industrial Medicine and Public Health was established by the Council and President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 4 April 1917, at the request of thirty Fellows, including John B. Deaver, G, E. De Schweinitz, William W. Keen, John B. Roberts, and Alfred Stengel. The work of the Section was purely scientific and intended to present programs on matters of public and industrial health concerns, In 1923, the name of the Section was changed to the Section on Public Health and Industrial Medicine; in 1935 or 1936, a more inclusive name, the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine, was adopted. Due to declining membership, the Section was disbanded in February 1971.

The collection contains correspondence of the clerks of the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 1967-1971, along with bank account statements and a check register, showing the financial situation and transactions of the Section. The correspondence, from clerks Samuel R. Moore, Jr., and Judith S. Mausner, describes the activities of the Section, the transition from one clerk to the next, and the reasons for the discontinuance of the Section in 1971. Included are annual reports of the Section for 1967 and 1969 and Judith S. Mausner's report, 23 February 1970, on the Section's proposed discontinuance.

This collection of records of the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine were donated to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Judith S. Mausner, last clerk of the Section, on 18 September 1974.

The collection was processed and catalogued in 1991.
