The College of Physicians of Philadelphia appointed a Committee on the Revision of the Pharmacopoeia on 3 October 1888. The committee was charged with reviewing the Pharmacopoeia of the United States and making recommendations concerning changes to the College before the 1890 meeting of the National Committee on Revision. The committee's report was read and adopted on 5 February 1890 and its recommendations given to the College's delegates to the National Committee. The committee was composed of W. S. W. Ruschenberger, its chairman, Roberts Bartholow, R. J. Dunglison, I. Minis Hays, and H. C. Wood. At the resignation of R. J. Dunglison in 1889, Hobart A. Hare was added to the committee.

Final report, dated 1890 Feb. 1, of the committee appointed by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia to review and revise the 1880 edition of the Pharmacopoeia of the United States. The report is in the hand of the committee's chairman, W. S. W. Ruschenberger, and recommends that quantities of ingredients be stated "in parts by weight", the langauge of the pharmacopoeia be simple, straightforward, and comprehensible, and metric measurements and the centigrade scale be avoided. The report also includes a list of materia medica articles to be omitted or added to the revised text.
