Overview and metadata sections
The American Association for the History of Medicine is North America's oldest continuously functioning scholarly organization devoted to the study of all aspects of the history of the health professions, disease, public health, and related subjects. It is comprised of professional historians, practicing health professionals, librarians and archivists in the history of the health sciences, graduate students and students actively seeking professional degrees. Its annual meetings occur each spring and include, over a two and a half day period, a wealth of workshops, plenary sessions, and competitively peer-reviewed scholarly papers.
This is a collection of records of the American Association for the History of Medicine. Materials include: minutes; reports; correspondence and memoranda; membership directories and member card files; financial records; annual meeting programs; guidelines for annual meetings; abstracts of papers; listings of research in progress; newsletters; and photographs. The collection also includes artifacts, such as t-shirts, tote bags, and the Association's seal. Officers represented in the collection include Jeanne L. Brand (President), Todd L. Savitt (Secretary-Treasurer), John B. Blake (Secretary-Treasurer), Robert Hudson (President), Ken Ludmerer (President), Gunter B. Risse (President), and Judith Leavitt (President). The collection documents the work of various committees, including, but not limited to, the Local Arrangements Committee, the Finance Committee, the Editorial Committee, the Syrock and Osler Medal Committees, and the Membership Committee.
