Overview and metadata sections
Margaret Huyler Goodbody was born November 15th, 1918 in Rhinebeck, New York and spent most of her life in Honolulu, HI. She was a member of the Bryn Mawr College class of 1939 and majored in geology. During her college years, she lived in Denbigh Hall and was active in the planning of many social events. After graduating, Huyler Goodbody worked briefly for the Hawaii Board of Water Supply as an Assistant Geologist but, according to her daughter, was dismissed because the men were uncomfortable with her presence. She briefly worked as an assistant kindergarten teacher. In 1941, she married Thomas Goodbody, Jr., an attorney, with whom she had six children. Huyler Goodbody became a homemaker after marriage and served on many volunteer committees, including the YWCA. She passed away on January 20th, 1996 in Honolulu, HI.
The Margaret Huyler Goodbody papers are composed of correspondence, memorabilia, and class notes from her time at Bryn Mawr College. Huyler Goodbody wrote weekly letters to her parents, Helen Stewart Huyler (class of 1902) and Rev. Peter E. Huyler. These letters are mostly concerned with day to day life at the college, discussing classes, dorm life, friends, weekend activities (movies, dates, parties, dances, etc.) infirmary care, clothing, travel, food, traditions, and other information relating to student life. Letters from her senior year begin to contemplate her future life and activities after Bryn Mawr. One folder contains several letters to her parents from her roommate, the infirmary, and relatives she stayed with over vacations.
Memorabilia in the collection contains newspaper clippings, a 1939 class song book, several grade cards, and other miscellany.
Class notes are primarily from Geology classes, but courses in History of Art and Modern Drama are also represented.
