Abstract:
The Samuel Hadden Papers contain the personal papers of Dr. Samuel Bernard Hadden (1900-1988). Born in Dunmore, PA Dr. Hadden completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served his internship and residency at the Philadelphia General Hospital. He pursued his interest in neuro-psychology, earning attention for his work in group psychotherapy. While Dr. Hadden was regarded as a compassionate therapist, his views on the treatment of male homosexual clients are controversial as he found homosexuality to be an "experientially determined and treatable condition." The collection contains assorted awards and certificates; papers written by Dr. Hadden; notes; and portraits. An oversize folder contains additional awards and certificates and two group photos of hospital staff, one at Philadelphia General Hospital. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Andrew Newman Typescript is a typescript of "From a Surgeon's Viewpoint: Philadelphia Shriners Hospital 1925-1995." Written by Dr. Andrew Newman, a Philadelphia-area doctor, the typescript serves as a brief history of the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia in response to the hospital's relocation to North Broad Street and the demolition of the original hospital building. Includes photocopies of curriculum vitaes, ALS, photographic prints, and patient records. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Dr. Alfred Stille's personal correspondence is housed in this collection. The main theme of the letters follows the temperance movement, including a newspaper clipping explaining medicine preparation without the use of alcohol. Items found interleaved in a book (The temperance movement or, The conflict between man and alcohol, by Henry William Blair, 1888, call number Ncc 167) in the Library's collection. Contains correspondence and clipping from 1887 to 1887. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Abstract:
In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). The Records of the Office of Operations date from 1981 to 2008, although the bulk of the material dates from 1996 to 2006. The records include project files for major maintenance or renovations to the building, including roof replacement; Programing Committee minutes; and planning and advertising material for College events and lectures. In 1995, the C. Everett Koop Community Health Information Center (CHIC) opened, operated by the Katherine A. Shaw Public Services Division of the Library of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The CHIC was a community resource that provided the public with access to the latest information about medical and health concerns. Available resources included electronic information, journals, newsletters, pamphlets, videocassettes, and a circulating collection of books. The CHIC was operated by the Katherine A. Shaw Public Services Division. The Records of the Consumer Health Information Center span the years 1991 to 2003 and include correspondence regarding planning and operations; grant proposals to fund the CHIC; basic information about the collection materials; and pamphlets, flyers, and branded realia.

The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was established in 1976 to promote to the scholarly community the rich historical resources of the College's historical library and the Mütter Museum. From its founding, the Wood Institute also took over printing and editorial duties of the College's journal, Transactions and Studies, which was published in 1793 and from 1844 to 2002. As of 2018, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Truman G. Schnabel, Jr., Papers date from 1908 to 2007 and represent Schnabel's career at Philadelphia General Hospital and in the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Medicine, as well as the numerous professional medical organizations in which he was involved. The collection is divided into eight series: Boards, Committees, and Groups; Correspondence; Foundations; Lectures, Speeches, and Talks; Personal Files; Philadelphia General Hospital; Published Articles; and Truman G. Schnabel, Sr. Truman G. "Nipper" Schnabel, Jr., received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. The Committee on College Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1935. Over the years, the Committee on College Collections worked closely with the Committee on the Mutter Museum; by 1939, the same Fellows served on both committees. The Museum Council of Philadelphia is the oldest and one of the largest regional associations of museums in the United States. Gretchen Worden was an avid supporter of local, national, and international professional organizations. She spent her career at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and later joined the Museum Council of Philadelphia. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities, operations, and programs of various committees of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Museum Council of Philadelphia, and span the years of 1932 to 2006. Zachary B. Friedenberg letter, January 1944

Abstract:
Born in New York City on April 12, 1915, Zachary B. Friedenberg graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1939. He served in World War II as a surgeon in the 95th Evacuation Hospital, an advanced army field hospital, in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany and participated in three D-day landings. He was honored with the European Theater Ribbon, the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque, and the American Defense Service Medal. After his military experience, he went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he trained as an orthopaedic resident and fellow from 1945 to 1949. He then joined the faculty, where he attained the rank of full professor in 1970. In 1955, he was elected as a Fellow to The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Friedenberg was married to his wife, Kathleen, for over 30 years. They had two children. He died January 27, 2011, in Bryn Mawr, PA. Washington L. Atlee correspondence, 1851-1855 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Washington Lemuel Atlee was born in Lancaster, PA, on February 22, 1808. He began studying medicine under his eldest brother, Dr. John Light Atlee, at the age of 15. By 1826, when Atlee started his formal medical education at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, he had already attended over 40 obstetrics cases. He graduated from Jefferson in the spring of 1829 after completing two full courses of lectures. In 1844, Atlee accepted the position of Chair of Medical Chemistry in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, where he stayed until 1852. He assisted in founding the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania, and the American Medical Society. Atlee was elected as a Fellow of The College of Physicians in 1846. Although a general practitioner, he was well-known for his operations of oviarotomy. He died on September 7, 1878, in Philadelphia. World War II ration book of Arthur Dannenberg, August 1943

Abstract:
Arthur M. Dannenberg, Sr., born in Philadelphia on 7 January 1891, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1913. He served an internship at the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia — now the Albert Einstein Medical Center (AEMC) — and then volunteered for service in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. After his service, he applied for an appointment to a junior position in the pediatrics department of the Jewish Hospital, and eventually became the senior attending pediatrician and chief of pediatrics at the Northern Division of the AEMC in 1938. Dannenberg served as a consultant to a number of Philadelphia area institutions engaged in the care of children. His private practice increased rapidly following his appointment as chief of pediatrics at the AEMC and his involvement as consultant to so many of the social agencies in Philadelphia that were engaged in the care of children. Joseph Hines correspondence, 1854-1866 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Joseph Hines was born 25 December 1835 in Hardwick, Vermont, to Nathan Hines and Martha (Griffin) Hines. By the time he was 18, in 1854, he was working for a Mr. Page, selling patent medicine (pills) throughout Wayne, Bradford, and other northern counties in Pennsylvania. Later, Hines was a druggist and stationer in Athens, Pennsylvania; by 1884, he had bought the business from a Dr. H. L. Gibbs. He was elected burgess of Athens in 1894. Hines died 15 June 1917 from pneumonia. This small collection consists of 21 letters sent to various family members by Joseph Hines during the years 1854 to 1866. Hines wrote most of his letters to his sister, Maria, and his brother, Levi, and several to his parents. In his letters, Hines writes about the weather, his boarding rooms, people he encounters as he travels, and his customers. The idea of forming an Institute for the History of Medicine at the College of Physicians was first proposed in 1966. In 1974, the President of the College, John Hubbard, put together a small committee to discuss the prospect of an institute for the history of medicine. The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was founded in 1976 to support research in the field of social medical history. In January 1977, Ronald F. Kotrc was selected as the first Director of the F. C. Wood Institute. As of 2018, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Records of the Committee for an Institute of the History of Medicine date from 1974 through 1977, and document the early beginnings of the Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine.

Records of the Committee on the Mary Scott Newbold lecture, 1923-1968 (gaps) (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1917, Clement B. Newbold founded the Mary Scott Newbold lectureship fund in memory of his wife. Newbold was a member of W. H. Newbold's Son and Co. banking firm, and had donated to the College in the past. The Mary Scott Newbold lectureship was to "enable [the College] to obtain distinguished lecturers to address the College on subjects related to medicine or the allied sciences." As of 2003, the College was still hosting an annual Mary Scott Newbold lecture. The Records of the Committee on the Mary Scott Newbold lecture contain the Committee's reports from 1923 to 1930 and 1934 to 1938, as well as a transcript of the Symposium on Legal and Ethical Implications of the Non-Medicinal Use of Drugs, held in 1968.

Douglas P. Murphy Papers, 1917-1972 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Douglas P. Murphy (1893-1971) served as a surgeon in the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) with the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I. During his military service, Murphy worked in several medical hospitals in France from 1917 until the war's end in 1918. Surviving the war intact, and even managing to get married during his time overseas, Murphy returned home to Philadelphia and opened his own obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) practice. His clinical experience eventually branched into a teaching position as the Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Research Associate at University of Pennsylvania Gynecean Hospital Institute of Gynecologic Research. The Douglas P. Murphy Papers span from 1917 until 1972. The collection includes several account books from Murphy's medical practice, which document patient visits, notes on their health, and any accrued fees. Abstract:
The collection contains files maintained by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia's Office of Finance and Accounting and Office of the Treasurer concerning special funds, bequests, and estates, 1937 to 1987. The Office of Finance and Accounting of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created in March 1971 with the hiring of the first Comptroller, Before this time, the duties of the Comptroller's Office were performed by the College's Executive Director and Executive Secretary or Clerk. The title "Comptroller" became "Controller" by 1990. In 1991, the Controller's Office was renamed the Office of Finance and Accounting, and the Controller became the Director of Finance and Accounting. This is currently [2018] an active office.

Abstract:
The Records of the Committee on By-laws and Ordinances document the preparation of the Ordinances and By-laws of the College of Physicians issued in 1818, 1924, 1935, 1958, 1971, and 1980. Included also are correspondence, reports, and minutes from meetings, dateing from 1966 to 1967, and 1973 to 1978. In 1990, as a result of major changes in the administration of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Committee on By-Laws and Ordinances was eliminated from the list of Standing Committees of the College. The committee's responsibilities were undertaken by the Executive Committee and other ad hoc committees.

Abstract:
The Office of Advancement of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia was formed in 2015 by the merging of two departments: the Communications Department and the Development Department, which were created in 1988 and 1987, respectively. The functions of the Office of Advancement include all aspects of fundraising; public relations for the entire College; and administration of the Fellowship and Friends of the Mütter, a membership program open to the public which supports the Mütter Museum. The Lecture and Event Files of the Communication and Development Departments date from 1992 to 1995 and consist of planning files regarding College lectures and other special events, including a health care forum, co-sponsored with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
