Abstract:
The Inter-Parliamentary Union was organized in 1889 by Randal Cremer (England) and Frédéric Passy (France) as an association of members of the national legislative bodies of the world. It was established to secure cooperation of countries to work toward peace by means of a universal organization of nations; initially for individual parliamentarians, but since transformed into an international organization of the parliaments of sovereign states. By 1921 it was headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with over one hundred national parliaments as members.

Abstract:
Peace Action, Inc. was founded about 1979 as the Disarmament Action Network (DAN). The name of the organization was changed name to Peace Action, Inc. about 1985. The group was begun informally by members of the American Friends Service Committee's Cambridge. Massachusetts office and was affiliated with the Walk for Peace, the Human Race/Runners Around the World, and Give Peace a Dance. Many of the organization's actions concerned the anti-nuclear movement of the period. Peace Action, Inc. was not connected to the national organization, Peace Action.

Mohandas K. Gandhi Collected Papers, 1919- (bulk)

Abstract:
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar in Gujarat, India. He trained as a barrister and worked in Durban, South Africa. Influenced primarily by Hinduism, but also by elements of Jainism and Christianity as well as writers including Tolstoy and Thoreau, Gandhi developed the satyagraha ('devotion to truth'), a new nonviolent way to redress wrongs. Gandhi returned to India and in 1919, he announced a new satyagraha which attracted millions of followers. By 1920, Gandhi was a dominant figure in Indian politics. He transformed the Indian National Congress, and his program of peaceful non-cooperation with the British included boycotts of British goods and institutions, leading to arrests of thousands. For the next 20 years he led nonviolent protests against British policies and colonial power in India. The Albert Einstein Institution was founded in 1983 and is dedicated to advancing the study and use of strategic nonviolent action in conflicts throughout the world. It is committed to the defense of freedom, democracy, and the reduction of political violence through the use of nonviolent action. The principle founder of the Albert Einstein Institution is Dr. Gene Sharp. To further its mission, the Institution has supported research projects, actively consulted with resistance and pro-democracy groups, and worked to publicize the power and potential of nonviolent struggle around the world through educational materials, analyses, translations, workshops, and media visibility. The Albert Einstein Institution was named after the scientist, Albert Einstein and continues his struggle to resolve the continuing problems of political violence.

Abstract:
David McReynolds (1929-2018), was an activist with the War Resisters League, the Socialist Party USA and the Democratic Socialists of America. He was an editor of Liberation magazine in the 1950s and a leader of the WRL from the 1950s until his retirement in 1999. McReynolds ran for Congress twice and for President of the U.S. twice, including a run in 2000. McReynolds has attempted to integrate anti-war and pacifist philosophy with Socialist economics. David McReynolds was openly gay and had written about this topic as well.

Harrisburg Defense Committee Collected Records, 1970-1973 (bulk)

Abstract:
On January 12, 1971, Dr. Eqbal Ahmad, Father Philip Berrigan, Sister Elizabeth McAlister, Father Neil McLaughlin, Anthony Scoblick (a married priest), and Father Joseph Wenderoth were indicted on federal charges of conspiring to kidnap Henry Kissinger and blow up the heating systems of federal buildings in Washington, D.C. The government also cited as co-conspirators Father Daniel Berrigan, Sister Beverly Bell, Marjorie Shuman, Paul Mayer (a married priest), Sister Jogues Egan, Thomas Davidson and William Davidon. The six defendants were arraigned on February 8, 1971 and each pled 'not guilty.' A second indictment was handed down on April 30, 1971 in which John Theodore (Ted) Glick was added to those charged (the defendants were thereafter known as the Harrisburg 8), and the charges were expanded to include destroying files and property of the federal government, and conspiracy to possess illegal explosives. Abstract:
The Society for the Promotion of Universal and Permanent Peace, also known as the London Peace Society, was founded June 14, 1816. Members were primarily Protestant, especially Quaker. Although its official platform was based on an absolutist pacifist stance, its members included peace workers who did not accept the full pacifist position. By 1930 it had taken the name of International Peace Society, having become incorporated with the International Christian Peace Fellowship.

Slater is internationally known for her expertise and work on disarmament issues.

Cora Weiss Papers, 1960- (bulk)

Abstract:
Cora Weiss is a peace and social justice leader and activist. She is a supporter of the United Nations, an early member of Women Strike for Peace, a leader in the anti-Vietnam war movement in the United States. In the 1970s Weiss was the director of the Riverside Church (New York, NY) Disarmament Program. Weiss was also active with SANE, SANE/Freeze, Peace Action, and The Hague Appeal for Peace. Weiss became president of the International Peace Bureau in 2000. She has always been active in women's peace issues, hosting the first women's radio program in New York City in the 1970s, attending women's disarmament summits in the former Soveit Union, the U.N. Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, and many other events. Weiss is the recipient of numerous peace awards from all over the world.

Bertha von Suttner Collected Papers, 1881-1917, 1993-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bertha von Suttner was an Austrian peace activist and intellectual, and the author of one of the first international bestselling novels focused on peace ("Lay Down Your Arms") published in 1891. In her life-long correspondence on peace matters with Alfred Nobel she urged him to establish a prize for peace. Von Suttner was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, the first woman to be thus recognized.

Abstract:
In the early 1940s National Mental Health Foundation originated in 1944-1945 when Harold Barton and three associates, serving at Byberry State Hospital in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), announced plans for a national campaign to improve the conditions in mental hospitals. The exposure of these conditions through the efforts of men serving in CPS, and their efforts to be a nonviolent presence in mental institutions, began a new movement in mental health care in the U.S. The National Mental Health Foundation still exists today as the National Mental Health Association.

The SOA Watch was founded in 1990 by Catholic peace activist, Father Roy Bourgeois. The organization tracks and monitors the work of the School of the Americas (SOA), renamed the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation," (WHISC), in 2001. The WHISC is a combat training school for Latin American military personnel, located at Fort Benning, Georgia. The SOA Watch is a direct action protest organization.

Nancy J. Babb Collected Papers, 1921-1949 (bulk)

Abstract:
Nancy Babb (1884-1948) was a member of the Society of Friends who served as a field representative for the Red Cross and then as a relief worker in Russia from 1917 to the mid 1920s. On her return to the United States in 1928 Babb lectured about her work in Russia. Babb also volunteered for a number of various women's organizations, including the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Babb established the National Circulating Library of Student's Peace Posters, an organization that sponsored annual contests for children and young adults to create posters against war and on peace topics. The NCLSPP offered prizes and art school scholarships to winning posters.

Neil Wollman (1950 - ) is a peace activist and psychologist. Beginning ca. 1984, Wollman began to pressure Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) to engage in socially responsible investing, including divesting from companies that did business in South Africa or built nuclear weapons. Wollman helped to form the Make TIAA-CREF Ethical Coalition. He is the the author of the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility (www.graduationpledge.org), and iscurrently involved with Kids Can make A Difference "to inspire students to realize that it is within their power to help eliminate hunger and poverty in their communities, country and world."

The Agape Foundation was a non-profit public foundation, which raised and distributed funds to groups working for nonviolent social change. From its formation in 1969 by a group of pacifists and anti-war activists in Palo Alto, California, the Agape Foundation provided millions of dollars to nonviolent, grassroots organizations throughout the western United States. It was headquartered in San Francisco. In 2010 the Agape Foundation merged with the Peace Development Fund.

Anna B. Eckstein Collected Papers, 1886-1944 (bulk)

Abstract:
Born in Coburg, Germany, Anna B. Eckstein eventually became a naturalized American citizen and joined the Boston [Massachusetts] Peace Society. She became an ardent champion of world peace and gave numerous lectures and wrote many articles on peace problems of the United States and of Europe. Eckstein was a vice-president of the American Peace Society (1905-1911), and an honorary member of the Liberal Christian League in London and of many other social and education societies. She collected signatures for "The World Petition to Prevent War Between Nations" for The Hague Conventions. Eckstein had begun to prepare another petition for the 3rd Hague Conference for which she had some 6 million signatures when her efforts were ended by the advent of World War I. Her manuscript "The Will to Power Harmonized" was refused publication by Nazi authorities.

Abstract:
Veterans For Peace, Inc. (VFP) is an educational and humanitarian organization dedicated to the abolishment of war. VFP iss comprised primarily of veterans of the United States military, but non-veterans may also join as associate members. VFP's statement of purpose (as of 2010) states that their mission is: "To increase public awareness of the costs of war; to restrain the U.S. government from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations; to end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons; to seek justice for veterans and victims of war; to abolish war as an instrument of national policy". VFP members pledge to use nonviolent, democratic means to achieve these aims.
