This file includes correspondence and memoranda dated 1945, pertaining to the proposed organization of a new movement for radical nonviolent pacifists. Includes a letter of April 27, 1945, of which signers include Rex Corfman, Henry Dyer, Roy Finch, Lewis Hill, Morris Horowitz, Byron Johnson, Igal Roodenko, and Stanley Rappeport; a list of the addressees is included on the same page as the signers. Collection also includes a "Memorandum on Effective Pacifist Organization for Action" by George M. Houser; "Statement" by Evan W. Thomas"Memorandum on Proposed Organization of Left Wing Pacifist-Socialists: A Proposal for an Organizational Conference" signed by David Dellinger, William Kuenning, and Elizabeth Peterson, and "The February Conference on Non-Violent Revolutionary Socialism.".

Topsfield Foundation Records, 1983-1997 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Topsfield Foundation was founded by Paul J.Aicher in 1982. Aicher, a former engineer later turned philanthropist created a Foundation to aid grassroots citizens' groups in working against nuclear proliferation. In 1984 the Foundation began publishing the state-by-state Grassroots Peace Directories to provide networking information for these organizations and the larger peace movement. In the mid-1980s Aicher created two additional projects: ACCESS, a security information service based in Washington, D.C., to further the exchange of information and viewpoints on international affairs and conflict transformation; and helped form OPTIONS to improve and deepen the debate over security policy and to increase public participation in policy formation. In the 1990s the Topsfield Foundation changed its focus to community dialogue and community building through grassroots organizations. In 2004 the Topsfield Foundation was renamed as the Paul J. Abstract:
Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace, located near Rochester, New York, was formed in May, 1972. GVPC is a nonviolent activist group consists of concerned individuals from western upstate New York. Since that time the organization has worked against the Vietnam war, and for amnesty for war resisters, for nuclear disarmament (with particular emphasis on Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, New York), and for a change in national priorities to stress human needs rather than military spending. It remains very active against U.S. participation in war in the Middle East and elsewhere, as well nuclear weapons, and military spending.

Nuclear Resister Records, 1980- (bulk)

Abstract:
In 1980, Jack and Felice Cohen-Joppa became co-coordinators of the National No-Nukes Prison Support Collective, which educated about peace issues and advocate for imprisoned anti-nuclear activists. The Cohen-Joppas also published The Nuclear Resister newsletter as an essential element of this work. In 1988 the organization changed its name to The Nuclear Resister. The function of the Nuclear Resister was to provide comprehensive reporting on arrests for anti-nuclear civil resistance in the United States. There was an emphasis on providing support for the women and men jailed for these actions. In 1990 reporting coverage was expanded to include anti-war arrests in North America, plus overseas anti-nuclear and anti-war resistance with the same emphasis on prisoner support. Abstract:
Handwritten address; a plea, dated 28th of April 1846, signed by 1623 English women, invoking a common ancestry and urging their American sisters to unite with them "in using the influence we possess, which is not powerless though exerted chiefly around the domestic hearth." The exchange was prompted due to tensions between England and the United States known as the "Oregon Question" a boundary dispute resulting from competing claims to the Pacific Northwest territory. Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain on a person-to-person level. T. Corder Catchpool Collected Papers, 1914-1952 (inclusive)

Abstract:
T. Corder Catchpool refused any service when the Compulsory Military Service Act was passed in 1916 in Great Britain. He was in prison slightly more than two years, after which he published On Two Fronts: Letters of a Conscientious Objector, a memoir about his experiences during the war and in prison. After World War I, Catchpool became a relief worker, secretary for the Friends International Centre in Berlin, and peace worker. He performed reconciliation work with the Friends War Victims Relief Committee in Berlin and eventually became secretary of the Quaker Centre there. After his arrest by the Gestapo because of his assistance to those adversely affected by Hitler's regime, Catchpool returned to England and made frequent trips to the continent to work as an interpreter for English peace efforts and as a relief worker for Germans in Czechoslovakia and Lithuania. The Indochina Resource Center was founded in 1971 to inform the American people, legislators, and the media about the war in Indochina. The IRC also disseminated information about the countries of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam where U.S. military personnel were fighting or bombing. The IRC changed its name to the Southeast Asia Resource Center in 1976. In 1982 the organization was absorbed by Asia Research Center.

Elkinton Family Doukhobor Papers, 1884- (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Doukhobors are a pacifist sect. They originated in Russia but were forced to emigrate to Canada in 1898 due to their refusal to bear arms for the Tsar. In the late 1930s their leader, Peter P. Verigin, created an organization known as the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ, also known as the Orthodox Doukhobors, which has maintained the tradition of Doukhobor cultural activities. The Elkinton Family, a prominent Philadelphia (Pa.) Quaker family, and other members of the Society of Friends in Canada and the United States have offered moral and material assistance to the Doukhobors because of the connection of their beliefs in pacifism and simplicity.

Abstract:
John McConnell was born in 1915, in Davis City, Iowa. He has been an minister, author, editor, advocate for the environment, and businessman. He organized Meals for Millions in 1962 in San Francisco to feed displaced Hong Kong refugees and organized the Minute for Peace radio broadcast in 1964. In 1968 McConnell designed the Earth Flag, depicting the planet as seen from space. McConnell proposed the idea of Earth Day in 1969 to celebrate a peaceful planet. He also proposed Sea Citizens in 1974, and Earth Trustees in 1995. John McConnell died in 2012.

Abstract:
Consider the Alternatives Productions was established in 1972 by the Philadelphia chapter of SANE, to conduct educational and non- partisan political activities and to receive tax deductible contributions. It was first called the SANE Education Fund of Pennsylvania. One project supported by the SANE Education Fund was a weekly half-hour radio broadcast called "SANE Views the World." In March 1978, the title of the series was changed to "Consider the Alternatives." By 1990 the organization funded only two projects: the Consider the Alternatives radio program and the SANE Education Fund Peace Award. In August of that year the name of the organization was officially changed to Consider the Alternatives Productions.

The Eichel Family papers provide a unique glimpse into the lives of conscientious objectors and peace activists from one family over two generations, from 1916 onward. Julius Eichel, David Eichel and Albert Eichel were all C.O.s during WWI. Julius Eichel and his wife Esther Eichel protested WWII. Their son Seymour Eichel also served time in prison for his refusal to serve in the military in the 1950s.

American Union Against Militarism Records, 1915-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1915 a group of New York pacifists and near-pacifists organized the "Anti-militarism Committee" to combat the war spirit of the time. Activities included lobbying, publishing, a lecture campaign, and the establishment of a Civil Liberties Bureau. The most notable achievements were the work in the successful effort to avert war with Mexico in 1916 and the encouragement of opposition to peacetime conscription following World War I. The office was raided by the government and American Union Against Militarism publications were sometimes stopped by the postal authorities but the organization continued unintimidated.

Norman Jehiel Whitney (1891-1967) was a Quaker teacher, writer and devoted peace worker. From 1919-1957 he helped establish, and directed for many years, the Syracuse Peace Council. He left Syracuse in 1957 to work for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in peace education. Whitney's major peace work was in the area of counseling conscientious objectors to war (COs), particularly those in Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps. In 1941 he helped establish the New York State Board for Civilian Public Service, which attempted to counsel and assist Conscientious Objectors in New York state.

This collection contains materials given to the donor by her aunt, June Miller Thompson. Materials include photos, media, audiotapes, and diaries related to the Great Peace March. Her writings related to peace, peaceful civil disobedience, nuclear war, and nuclear energy are also included. Her engagement in the Ribbon prior to and during August 1985, included her participation and presence (and that of her husband, Bill Willard Thompson) in Hiroshima while the Ribbon was unfolding in Washington, DC. She is the sister of Justine Merritt, the donor's mother. The collection also contains mterials given to the donor by her mother, Justine Miller Merritt. Materials include photos, books, audiotapes, VHS tapes, media, diaries, and writing related to the Ribbon, a multi-year grassroots effort to educate and motivate people to protect the earth and all that they love from the dangers of nuclear war. Hannah Clothier Hull Papers, 1889-1958 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Hannah Clothier Hull (1872-1958), was one of the founders of the Woman's Peace Party and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She served as a national officer of the WILPF for nearly forty years. Hull was also active in other social reform movements. A member of a well-to-do Quaker family, Hannah Clothier graduated from Swarthmore College in 1891. She first worked at a Philadelphia settlement house and then entered the graduate program in social work at Bryn Mawr College. In the following year Hannah Clothier married William Isaac Hull, a fellow pacifist and professor of political science at Swarthmore. Hannah Clothier Hull worked in the woman suffrage campaign and women's rights, had some interest in temperance, was a member of the Friends Peace Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and was on the board of the American Friends Service Committee (1928-1947).

Bulk of the collection is in printed or mimeographed form, with some typed or photocopied items also present. Included are pamphlets, tracts, leaflets, articles and reprints, reports, speeches, statements, form letters, announcements and papers relating to conferences and other meetings, and clippings. The collection was microfilmed in 1979. In 2003, a large amount of material duplicated elsewhere in the Peace Collection was removed, so that the material in the boxes no longer corresponds to the material on the microfilm. Primary source material was transferred to the appropriate record group in Friends Historical Library. Lydia G. Wentworth, was a writer and ardent peace advocate who lived most of her life in Brookline, Massachusetts. Despite illness which confined her to bed for over thirty years, she carried on a prolific correspondence and contributed hundreds of articles to newspapers and magazines. Wentworth was on the advisory committee of the Women's Peace Society, and was a member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Association to Abolish War, and the Boston League of Women Voters.

Founded in 1967 as Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace; objectives were to press for practical steps toward ending American participation in the Vietnamese Conflict, to use the business community's influence in expanding public support for disengagement, and to emphasize the war's adverse effect on the economy; name of the organization was changed in 1970 to Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace and New National Priorities, later (1973) shortened to Business Executives Move for New National Priorities. Henry E. Niles served as co-chairman of BEM with Harold Willens from 1967 to January 1969 and continued as chairman until the organization disbanded in 1982; successor organization: Business Executives for National Security, Inc.

In 1902, Edwin Ginn began publication of an International Library to promote knowledge about peace. In July 1910, he established the International School of Peace which, in December, became the World Peace Foundation. Its purpose was to promote better international relations and world order by preparing and distributing specialized literature, mostly to college and university libraries, and by holding conferences. It was closely allied with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and supported formation of the League of Nations and the Permanent Court of International Justice and, later, the United Nations.

Homer A. Jack (1916-1993) was a Unitarian Universalist clergyman and denominational official who sought to apply religious values to national and international affairs. Jack was executive secretary of the Chicago Council Against Racial and Religious Discrimination (1943-1948), executive director of SANE (1960-1964), and secretary general of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (1970-1983). He had been minister of churches in Lawrence, Kansas (1942-1943), Evanston, Illinois (1948-1959), and Winnetka, Illinois (1984-1987) and served as director of the Division of Social Responsibility of the Unitarian Universalist Association (1964-1970). Jack also chaired the NGO Committee on Disarmament (at UN Headquarters) from 1973-1984. Homer Jack "retired" to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, in Januaryuary 1987.
