Abstract:
Milton Lowenthal was an activist involved in peace and antinuclear movements in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, specifically those related to Three Mile Island and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was a sponsor of Japanese antinuclear artist Kazuaki Kita. This collection includes correspondence, financial records, manuscripts, minutes of meetings, newspaper clippings, reference files, and other memorabilia.

Abstract:
This organization was founded in March, 1988 as the U.S. Coalition of the International Comprehensive Test Ban Campaign. It was formed as a coalition of peace groups to raise public awareness of nuclear testing issues, and to call on governments to initiate testing moratoria and to undertake negotiations for a comprehensive test ban. Carolyn Cottom was its first Chair. The group changed name its name in 1989 to the United States Comprehensive Test Ban Coalition.

Abstract:
Katherine Lindsley Camp was born in 1918 [1919?], Mt. Kisco New York. She was a graduate of Swarthmore College (Class of 1940). Camp was elected president of the U.S. Section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1967, and served as international president, 1974-1980. In addition Camp was founder of the Citizens Bi-Racial Study Group; former president of the Pennsylvania Women's Political Caucus; made unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1972 on the Democratic ticket in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; member of the Society of Friends. Her papers include biographical information, personal correspondence, and involvement with numerous peace groups, as well as political activities.

Sydney Dix Strong Papers, 1890-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Sydney Dix Strong (1860-1938) was an outspoken pacifist and strong supporter of disarmament, war resistance, and organized labor. He was the pastor for churches in Ohio and Illinois and did settlement work in Chicago. For his peace stance made him unpopular during WWI and in Oct. 1917 he was expelled from membership in the Municipal League of Seattle because of a speech he had given before the National Council of Congregational Churches, in which he praised the I.W.W. (International Workers of the World). Strong published many articles and sermon series, as well as his book Rise of American Democracy in 1935, and from 1921-1938 was associate editor of Unity magazine. Other activities included a campaign to collect signatures for a "Peace Letter to the President" in 1926, while he was Secretary of the Seattle Peace League and of the Seattle group of Peacemakers; the development of a "2%" button, based on comments made by Albert Einstein that if 2% of those who were supposed to do...(see more)

Congress of Racial Equality Collected Records, 1942-1972 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Congress of Racial Equality was organized circa 1942 by an interracial group of University of Chicago students and theological seminary students, together with members of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (U.S.). The purpose of the organization was to eliminate all racial segregation and discrimination by means of interracial, direct nonviolent action. By 1966, CORE's official policy shifted to Black power and Black separatism while rejecting the former principles of non-violence. This small collection of records reflects the work done in CORE by George Houser.

Lucy Perkins Carner served on the board of such organizations as the American Friends Service Committee, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the War Resisters League, and the United World Federalists. She also joined the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. In many ways Carner worked for civil rights, protesting discrimination in businesses, and joining organizations such as the Congress on Racial Equality and the NAACP. She was also a war tax resister and protested against the Vietnam war.
