Abstract:
This collection consists of a small amount of the correspondence and reports generated during a letter exchange project, directed by Mary N. Chase from 1915 through the 1930s. As Secretary for the Society for the Promotion of International Amity at Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire, Chase encouraged the exchange of letters between U.S. students and their counterparts in other lands. Chase also served as Secretary of the New Hampshire Peace Society, and President of the New Hampshire Woman's Suffrage Association.

Abstract:
The United Peace Chest of Philadelphia coordinated and integrated Philadelphia organizations interested in promoting international peace. The name was often shortened to "United Peace Chest." The UPC was founded in 1938, though it was conceptualized in 1936 at a meeting of the Pennsylvania Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

Abstract:
Rosika Schwimmer was a suffragist and feminist leader from Hungary who worked internationally. She founded several Hungarian societies for the advancement of trade unionism, land reform, feminism, female suffrage and pacifism and worked to promote peace during World War I. She helped to form a number of U.S. and international peace groups, including the Emergency Peace Federation, the Henry Ford Peace Expedition, and the Woman's Peace Party. She received the World Peace Prize in 1937.

He registered as a Baptist conscientious objector but became a Quaker after his marriage to C. Jayne Tuttle in 1943.

Abstract:
Turn Toward Peace was founded in 1961 as a cooperative national effort of about 60 peace and liberal internationalist organizations; Norman Thomas was Chairman of TTP, and Robert Gilmore was the Executive Director. There eventually were offices in several large cities and 38 national organizations were affiliated with the organization. But by 1963, serious discord divided TTP and several years later a group split off to became the World Without War Council; some regional offices retained the name of "Turn Toward Peace."

The Washington Peace Center was formed in 1963 upon the dissolution of the Peace Action Center of Washington, D.C. The organization seeks to educate the public on peace issues through youth programs, conscientious objector/draft counseling, film screenings, speakers, workshops on peace topics, discussions, and the publication of a newsletter. Its mission statement as of 2013 includes : "The Washington Peace Center is an anti-racist, grassroots, multi-issue organization working for peace, justice, and nonviolent social change in the metropolitan Washington DC area."

SCI International Voluntary Service (U.S.) Records, 1954-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This organization was stablished around 1956 by Robert Stowell and others as an American affiliate of Service Civil International with the goals of voluntary service, self-discipline, and international friendship. The group operated approximately 87 workcamps between 1954 and 1974. SCI provided placements and alternative service for conscientious objectors. SCI suspended operation in the mid-1970s, but was revived in the mid-1980s by a group of former SCI volunteers.

Abstract:
The IPW was begun in January, 1987 by individuals who had participated in the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament. IPW members organized marches across the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987 and 1988, with marches planned for future years. The purpose was to create a climate of trust between American and Soviet citizens in which arms control and reductions would become increasingly easier, and to focus attention on the costs of the U.S.-Soviet arms race. The IPW was headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional U.S. offices. The collection includes correspondence, administrative files, marcher applications, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, and banners. Among the correspondents are: Allan Affeldt, Allen Smith, and Franklin Folsom.

The Brandywine Peace Community was headquartered in Media, PA until 1983, then moved to Swarthmore, PA.

Freeze Voter Records, 1983-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1983, supporters of the nuclear freeze founded Freeze Voter, an independent Political Action Committee (PAC). In response to the growing threat of nuclear war and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the PAC's main goal was to "elect a President and Congress who will enact a nuclear weapons Freeze between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. The Committee [will] achieve this goal through the electoral process." The organization worked on the grass-roots level to identify supporters of a nuclear freeze and encourage them to vote for pro-freeze candidates. By 1984 over $3 million had been raised and Freeze Voter was the 13 largest non0union, non-corporate PAC in the U.S. By 1988, with the ending of the Cold War, the Freeze Voter board decide to close down the organization. Remaining assets were turned over to the Professionals' Coalition for Nuclear Arms Control (which operated until 1992).

Committee of Responsibility to Save War-Burned and War-Injured Vietnamese Children Records, 1966-1978 (inclusive) 1968-1973 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Committee of Responsibility (COR) was formed in 1966. COR was comprised of medical personnel, scientists, clergymen, and concerned citizens who sought avenues for helping Vietnamese children under the age of 16. COR organizers provided direct medical aid by bringing children to the U.S. for treatment and rehabilitation. Approximately 100 children were treated in the U.S. most of whom lived with American families while undergoing medical treatment. Almost all of these children returned to Vietnam once their treatment had been completed.

The War Tax Resisters Penalty Fund began in 1982 as a volunteer project of the North Manchester, Indiana Fellowship of Reconciliation. It supported and encouraged conscientious war tax resisters in the U.S. As of 1994, the group had worked with about 1000 tax resisters and supporters, and numbered 500 members nationally.

He died suddenly in 1992 at the age of 68.

Abstract:
Bennett Andrews was an absolutist conscientious objector during World War II. He served a five year sentence Danbury Prison, a federal penitentiary, in Connecticut. There he worked in a number of positions in the prison. Bennett Andrews was released from prison on July 11, 1946 and received amnesty from President Truman in 1947. Florence Andrews (born in 1913) married Bennett on July 22, 1938. She was also a strong pacifist, who fully supported her husband's C.O. stance.

Peace Pilgrim was born Mildred Lisette Norman in 1908. Between 1953 and l964, she had walked 25,000 miles across the U.S. for peace. Peace Pilgrim eventually made seven pilgrimages, crossing North America. She was killed in an automobile accident on July 7, 1981, at the age of 71.

Committee for Nonviolent Action Records, 1958-1968 (inclusive)

Abstract:
CNVA was one of the first American peace groups to focus on nonviolentdirect action including civil disobedience. Its purpose of organizing imaginative and dramatic protest demonstrations on both land and sea attracted radical pacifists and called the attention of the American public to the atrocities of nuclear warfare. CNVA's first protest action was a vigil held outside the atomic weapons test grounds in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1957. In the second half of its existence CNVA efforts began to focus on Vietnam. The organization allied its resources with other American peace groups. As other American peace groups adopted CNVA's methods of dramatic and nonviolent demonstrations, its own numbers and support waned. In the fall of 1967, CNVA voted to merge with the War Resisters League, which became reality in January 1968.

Edwin D. Mead and Lucia Ames Mead Papers, 1876-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Edwin D. Mead (1849-1937), and Lucia Ames Mead (1856-1936), were both leading pacifists, writers, and social reformers of the U.S. and international peace movement. Edwin Mead directed the work of the World Peace Foundation and participated in many international peace congresses. He was an American delegate to the International Peace Bureau. Mead helped found the School Peace League and was a prominent member of the American Peace League. Lucia Ames Mead was a leading member of many feminist and pacifist organizations, including the Woman's Peace Party. Mead was a delegate to the founding conference of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919 and served as a vice-president on the board of the National Council for Prevention of War. She was also an officer of the National Council of Women of the United States, and was a member of many U.S. feminist associations.

Abstract:
The Keep America Out of War Congress was founded in 1938 (as the Keep America Out of War Comittee), by several leading peace organizations. The Congress was to pursue a joint, minimum six-point peace program. The aims of this program included the removal of U.S. ships and nationals from belligerent zones, a war referendum, the abandonment of plans for conscription and industrial mobilization, and greater economic and social justice at home and abroad. The Keep America Out of War Congress was dissolved in 1942, and was reorganized as the Post War World Council.

Ross Flanagan (1934- ), is Quaker pacifist and activist, has been involved in many Quaker-sponsored projects, peace, and civil rights activities. In the 1950s he served on the staff of the American Friends Service Committee. He was an early protestor against the Vietnam war and worked with A Quaker Action Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s Flanagan was involved in neighborhood revitalization projects in West Philadelphia.

Priscilla Hannah Peckover (1833-1931) devoted much of her life toward mobilization for peace. In 1879 she formed the Wisbech Peace Association to promote the development of women in work for peace. This group of men and women became a center for peace activity in Great Britain. They concentrated on establishing peace by means of arbitration and disarmament, based on Christian theology.

Hugh Richardson was born in England in 1864. He was a science instructor, lecturer, editor and author. During World War I, he visited prisoner-of-war camps in Scotland on behalf of the Emergency Committee of the Society of Friends and sent the prisoners seeds, linoleum, a sheet of rubber for printing, a stereoscope, a kaleidescope, writing tablets, and books. He lobbied for the non-payment of taxes until the end of the war, proposed disarmament by general agreement, and was against supporting scientific research that promoted military science.

Handwritten address; a plea, dated 28th of April 1846, signed by 1623 English women, invoking a common ancestry and urging their American sisters to unite with them "in using the influence we possess, which is not powerless though exerted chiefly around the domestic hearth." The exchange was prompted due to tensions between England and the United States known as the "Oregon Question" a boundary dispute resulting from competing claims to the Pacific Northwest territory. Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain on a person-to-person level. T. Corder Catchpool Collected Papers, 1914-1952 (inclusive)

Abstract:
T. Corder Catchpool refused any service when the Compulsory Military Service Act was passed in 1916 in Great Britain. He was in prison slightly more than two years, after which he published On Two Fronts: Letters of a Conscientious Objector, a memoir about his experiences during the war and in prison. After World War I, Catchpool became a relief worker, secretary for the Friends International Centre in Berlin, and peace worker. He performed reconciliation work with the Friends War Victims Relief Committee in Berlin and eventually became secretary of the Quaker Centre there. After his arrest by the Gestapo because of his assistance to those adversely affected by Hitler's regime, Catchpool returned to England and made frequent trips to the continent to work as an interpreter for English peace efforts and as a relief worker for Germans in Czechoslovakia and Lithuania. The Indochina Resource Center was founded in 1971 to inform the American people, legislators, and the media about the war in Indochina. The IRC also disseminated information about the countries of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam where U.S. military personnel were fighting or bombing. The IRC changed its name to the Southeast Asia Resource Center in 1976. In 1982 the organization was absorbed by Asia Research Center.

Abstract:
The Doukhobors are a pacifist sect. They originated in Russia but were forced to emigrate to Canada in 1898 due to their refusal to bear arms for the Tsar. In the late 1930s their leader, Peter P. Verigin, created an organization known as the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ, also known as the Orthodox Doukhobors, which has maintained the tradition of Doukhobor cultural activities. The Elkinton Family, a prominent Philadelphia (Pa.) Quaker family, and other members of the Society of Friends in Canada and the United States have offered moral and material assistance to the Doukhobors because of the connection of their beliefs in pacifism and simplicity.
