Abstract:
Frank Janczak Hartman (1893-1986) was a radium specialist and consultant who also worked as a "radium hound," searching for pieces lost by area hospitals and industry until his retirement in 1956. The Frank J. Hartman papers provide an insightful view into the changes atomic energy brought to society. Hartman, who owned two companies dealing with radium, clearly saw the product's value, but he also recognized the potential dangers and the damage that could result from the improper usage, storage and disposal of these materials. This collection will be extremely valuable to a researcher interested in Frank J. Hartman; the radium industry, sales and recovery; atomic energy in Canada; the history of the discovery of radium and the Curie family; and how atomic energy affected the United States. Abstract:
Samuel X Radbill (1901-1987) began his medical career as a general practitioner in 1926 and became a pediatrician in 1938, when he was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Radbill was perhaps better known as a medical historian, and collector of bookplates and old and rare medical texts than as a pediatrician. He believed that the study of medicine's past was useful to its practice, and he encouraged many of his professional colleagues to examine the history of their specialties. The Samuel X Radbill papers evidences Radbill's deep and unrelenting interest in the history of medicine, particularly the history of pediatrics and dermatology, folklore, ancient medicine, medical art and medical bookplates. The George Edmunds de Schweinitz Papers collection documents portions of de Schweinitz's professional medical career, largely from 1901 to 1918. George Edmund de Schweinitz was a prominent ophthalmologist, born in Philadelphia on October 26th, 1858. He worked and lectured at several hospitals and schools in the Philadelphia region until the late 1920s, and also made significant contributions to ophthalmological literature. The collection contains three series: "Correspondence," "Writings," and "Medical Practice Material." Researchers interested in George Edmund de Schweinitz's career, or ophthalmology practice in the early twentieth century will find significant material in this collection.

The Joseph McFarland papers consist of two collections and documents Dr. McFarland's medical career, particularly his involvement in parotid tumor and tetanus vaccination research from 1900 to 1943. Dr. McFarland was born in Philadelphia on February 9th, 1868, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1889. He continued to study and teach on pathology at various institutions in Philadelphia throughout his career. The collection contains two series, "Correspondence" and "Subject Files." Material in the collection includes letters sent to Dr. McFarland regarding his research, medical case notes, writings by Dr. McFarland, legal documents, and curriculum planning files. The Albert S. Ashmead papers (1875-1910) is a fine collection documenting the professional experiences of a well-known American leprologist. The focus of the collection is Ashmead's correspondence with other leprologist and international figures concerning the 1897 Berlin lepra conference. The collection also contains manuscripts of Ashmead's articles, the text for an unpublished anthology on Japanese medicine, and research notes and translations of articles concerning leprosy and anthropology.
