Louis N. Robinson and Caroline Hadley Robinson Correspondence, 1890-1936 (bulk) 1885-2021 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Louis N. Robinson, Swarthmore College Class of 1905, was a prominent Quaker economist and penologist. On June 17, 1908, he married Caroline Hadley (1885-1946) under the care of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting. She was the daughter of Walter Hadley and Alice Paxson Hadley and a graduate of Swarthmore College, Class of 1906. The collection contains Louis Robinson's letters 1901-1908, Caroline Hadley's letters 1895-1908, and transcripts with annotations by their granddaughter, Christine Erb. The letter vividly describe student life at Swarthmore College and during Louis's graduate study in Germany as well as family, Quaker, and social concerns. Also included are photographs of the Paxson branch of the family.

The collection contains typescripts of lectures written by Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Signe Wilkinson. Most are autobiographical and reflect her Quaker beliefs as well as activism through art. The papers are annotated and often include doodles and sketches.

Fisher-Brinton family papers, 1846-2020 (bulk) 1764-2020 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Fisher-Brinton collection contains the papers of an Irish-American and Pennsylvania family with roots in the earliest years of the Society of Friends. It includes correspondence, diaries, memoirs, photographs, scrapbooks, and other materials that reflect family and Quaker concerns, and, in particular, the Conservative branch of the Society of Friends. Abraham Fisher (1823-1909) was a member of a prominent Quaker family of Youghal County, Ireland. In 1871, he assumed a position as book-keeper for the Alexandra Colony, an English settlement on the San Javier River in rural Argentina. Unaware of the increasing violence in the region, his wife and children joined him in early 1872. In 1874 the family moved to Dymond City, North Carolina, and eventually, to Southeastern Pennsylvania. PG6 Quaker meeting reference files consists primarily of publications by and about Quaker meetings and committees, including pamphlets, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and other materials (mostly secondary source), collected at various times from various sources, and organized by meeting. It also includes directories (including lists of Quaker member organizations and individual Quakers) and epistles (letters exchanged between Quaker organizations, especially from one yearly meeting to another; often used to articulate Quaker doctrine and discipline). Some almanacs are stored with the collection, but are cataloged separately.

Members of the Charles and Priscilla Townsend family were active in the Society of Friends in Philadelphia and in Quaker concerns, especially penal reform, abolition, and the natural sciences.
