James Creese administration records, 1941-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
James Creese served as the president of the Drexel Institute from 1945 to 1963. His tenure began with a tremendous influx of students in the post-WWII years and continued to oversee tremendous growth of the Institute, both in the physical expansion of its campus and in the development of its academic programs, especially in engineering and cooperative education. Such extensive development required major capital investments, for which two major fundraising campaigns were undertaken during Creese’s leadership. Creese was also active in a number of local and national organizations, serving on numerous committees and sitting on the boards of several prominent local institutions. He resigned as president of Drexel in 1963 and died three years later in 1966.

Track and Cross-country records, 1947, 1970-1994

Abstract:
The Track and Field squad was among the first competitive sports teams formed at Drexel University in 1898, as part of the Department of Athletics. As early as 1911, the team competed at the Penn Relays, the oldest track and field competition in the United States. At the height of the program in the mid 1990s, there were six active track and field teams, which included both indoor and outdoor track and field teams for men and women, and men’s and women’s cross country teams. The teams were eliminated in May 1998, due to a budget deficit in the athletics department. The collection includes forms, statistics, and news about track and field events. It also includes a small amount of material about general team administration, as well as a limited number of brochures and information about other sports. The administrative series includes a few items regarding athlete recruitment and several unattributed and unidentified photographs. Abstract:
This collection consists of a series of images from two decades of the Drexel Institute's history. The photographs are arranged chronologically. Some are 8x10 glossy prints, while others are small prints mounted three or four to a page. The subjects vary, but most include students, faculty and administrators engaged in academic, administrative, athletic or social activities.

Abstract:
Four presidents of Drexel University are represented in the collection: James Creese (1896-1966, president 1945-1963), William Walsh Hagerty (1916-1986, president 1963-1984), William Samuel Gaither (b. 1932, president 1984-1987), and Richard Breslin (b. 1937 or 1938, president 1988-1994). This collection consists of subject files, reports, and other materials compiled by the staff of the Office of the President between 1950 and 1989, overlapping the terms of several presidents. It contains substantial material on the University City Science Center and President Gaither's long-range plan developed in the 1980s. The materials include correspondence, reports, memorandum, drafts, inauguration programs, pamphlets, brochures, drafts of reports,newspaper clippings and photocopies, minutes, agendas, and transparencies. Arrangement: Portions of the collection are arranged alphabetically by subject within each box.

In March 1956 the Tidewater Granary elevator shaft exploded, damaging four surounding buildings, including Drexel's Main building. This collection contains a series of photographs of the aftermath of the explosion taken by E. Lee Goldsborough, Jr. and his son Ted.

American Society for Information Science, Delaware Valley Chapter, records, 1961-1974 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The American Society for Information Science (ASIS), was a “non-profit professional association organized for scientific, literary and educational purposes and dedicated to the creations, organization, dissemination and application of knowledge concerning information and its transfer,” (ASIS Constitution). ASIS also served as a community of users to provide help, advice and the development of new techniques to those involved in the information sciences field. This collection documents the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Documentation Institute (ADI) and later, after a name change, of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). The records are largely administrative, but do provide insight into some of the concerns and challenges those in the information science profession faced from 1964 to 1971.

This collection consists chiefly of a set of subject files on organizations, university offices and departments, special projects, and administrative topics compiled by Drexel's ninth president, William S. Gaither. The collection also contains a record of Dr. Gaither's outgoing correspondence from June 1984 to December 1986 and a box of certificates presented to him at his inauguration held in 1985. The collection contains correspondence, memorandum, speeches, reports, memos, drafts, inauguration certificates, and brochures.
