Irene Eber gift of the Yedidya Geminder Memorial Collection of Sino-Judaica, circa 1940s-2018 (inclusive) 1970s-2010 (bulk)

Abstract:
Irene Eber (1929-2019) was a scholar and professor of Chinese intellectual history and the Jewish community in China. This collection, consisting almost entirely of photocopies of her research, is a resource for researchers interested in the Bible in China; Chinese and Yiddish literature and poetry; Jewish refugees in China, and specifically Shanghai; and the Jewish community in China before, during, and after World War II. In addition to Eber's research, there is a fairly robust grouping of her writings, although not all are complete. The collection, named by Eber in memory of her father, Yedidya Geminder who was murdered by the Nazis, contains no information about Geminder.

Abstract:
The Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900, and has developed and maintained its status as a prominent symphonic ensemble throughout its existence. Its history informs and intersects with the broader history of music in the twentieth century, as well as numerous historical movements, events and developments on a regional, national and global scale. This portion of the collection comprises audiovisual recordings from 1949-2016. Over 11,400 non-commercial recordings are currently processed and available. A majority are audio and audio-visual recordings of performances, rehearsals and broadcasts of The Philadelphia Orchestra. A small number represent other music ensembles such as the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and the Philly Pops. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center at the University of Pennsylvania, unofficially founded in 1982 and officially founded in 1995, supports the LGBTQ+ community at the University of Pennsylvania through services and programs focused on support, advocacy, and education. These records document the creation and development of the LGBT Center and the larger support of the LGBTQ+ community at Penn; the advocacy and influence of Robert Schoenberg and Center staff within the University of Pennsylvania administration; and the influence of global LGBTQ+ issues at the campus level at Penn and more broadly in academia.

Abstract:
Ashley Bryan (1923-2022) was an artist and storyteller best known for his award-winning children's book illustrations with particular emphasis on African folktales and African-American spirituals. Bryan authored, illustrated, published, and distributed his first book in Kindergarten, later graduating from Cooper Union and Columbia University, being awarded a Fulbright to study at the University of Freiburg, before becoming a professor at Dartmouth College. The collection documents his lifelong devotion to the arts including sketchbooks, artwork, and especially materials relating to the publication process of over sixty book projects. Consists of eleven Betacam video tapes containing an interview of Ernest Gordon (1916-2002) about his capture and internment in the Japanese camps in Burma and Siam (now Myanmar and Thailand) during World War II, along with raw scenes, stills, and B-roll. The videos were shot in the Princeton University Chapel in May 1991 by Windborne Productions, which was then working on a project to turn Gordon's book Through the Valley of the Kwai into a feature film.

Abstract:
Ursula Sternberg-Hertz (1925-2000) was a Philadelphia based artist who lived in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Canada before immigrating to the United States in 1971 with her husband, conductor Jonathan Sternberg. The collection documents her artistic career, with artwork ranging from rough sketches to finished pieces, using acrylics, charcoal, markers, pen-and-ink, stamps, watercolor, and other experimental mediums. She produced artwork on paper, metal, fabric, and leather; in sketchbooks; and on objects such as lampshades and boxes. In addition to her artwork, there is also family and personal material; correspondence; diaries, including an extraordinary run of her "visual diaries" from the early 1940s and from the 1970s until her death; and material related to her exhibits.
