Abstract:

The Catholic Club of Philadelphia, formerly the De Sales Institute of Philadelphia, was founded January 2, 1877. The Club offered wealthy men of a certain socioeconomic background cultural, intellectual, and social opportunities. This collection contains administrative records, including by-laws and reports, as well as general correspondence. Programs, souvenirs, and ephemera related to club-sponsored events and events sponsored by other local Catholic societies are also included. The collection also contains newspaper clippings, N.C.W.C. news releases from May- July 1923, and miscellaneous pamphlets, cards and circulars.

Samuel X. Radbill papers II, 1800-1987 (bulk) 1635-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Samuel X Radbill (1901-1987) began his medical career as a general practitioner in 1926 and became a pediatrician in 1938, when he was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Radbill was perhaps better known as a medical historian, and collector of bookplates and old and rare medical texts than as a pediatrician. He believed that the study of medicine's past was useful to its practice, and he encouraged many of his professional colleagues to examine the history of their specialties. The Samuel X Radbill papers evidences Radbill's deep and unrelenting interest in the history of medicine, particularly the history of pediatrics and dermatology, folklore, ancient medicine, medical art and medical bookplates. Of note, in the collection are three of Radbill's personal collections related to the history of medicine: collections of pamphlets, brochures and articles; medical art and other pictorial works; and medical journals and texts--all dating from the eighteenth to the twentieth...(see more)

Abstract:

Anna "Nancy" S. Taylor was a Bryn Mawr Chemistry major in the class of 1941. The Nancy S. Taylor papers consist of letters sent from Taylor, her future husband, her family, and her friends as well as ephemera and other printed materials that document Taylor's academic and social life at Bryn Mawr and the personal lives and thoughts of Taylor and her loved ones. The papers provide a personal look at the life and thoughts of a Bryn Mawr science major as she navigates her final years of college and begins to plan for her future with her soon-to-be husband while providing a glimpse at the lives, concerns, and thoughts of Americans, particularly white college students, amid growing concerns of World War II.

Abstract:

Eva Bryne was a Bryn Mawr student in the class of 1916 who went on to earn a M.A. in Latin in 1917 and a PhD in 1925 from the College. The Eva Bryne papers contain the personal papers of Bryne, dated 1882 to 1973, that document the lives, relationships, and interests of Bryne, her family, her close female friends, and some of her BMC classmates primarily from 1912 to 1971. The papers include correspondence, ephemera, personal writings, photographs, and other individuals' personal papers, with correspondence comprising the bulk of the materials. The strength of the papers lies in its documentation of Bryne and her friends' daily lives, of the experiences of BMC alumnae, and of Bryne's close, and at times romantic, friendships with three women, including Bryne's involvement in a three-way, family-coded relationship with two of these friends.
